Cappoquin/Railway win thriller

HANNA’S CAFÉ, FERMOY U13 CUP FINAL Cappoquin/Railway FC 2 Kilworth Celtic 1

What a game we had here to keep the fans on their toes right up to the final whistle. One of the best saves of the season was in this game, coming in the final few minutes.

The first real chance in this game came after five minutes when Cappoquin/Railway keeper Healy brought off a terrific save from Ball. Another Celtic chance came in the 13th minute when Daryl Pierce broke through the Cappoquin/Railway defence but his effort went across the goal and wide.

At this stage Celtic were well on top and one felt they must convert one of the chances. Kenneally again tested Healy who once more kept Celtic at bay. Then the opening goal came in the 21st minute and it came for the West Waterford side. A great move saw Condon give a great ball to striker Hogan who shot home to put them in front.

Pierce had a terrific volley in the 23rd minute but once again Healy denied him. A minute later Pierce was in again but this time his fine shot beat Healy and the sides were level. At the break both sides were level at 1-1.

The second half saw Celtic once again get on top. Lynch had a great shot for Celtic but once again Healy denied him. At the other end Cotter saved well for Celtic after Ware got in a fine effort.

Twice in as many minutes Healy kept Cappoquin/Railway in front with some great saves from Lynch and Kenneally. Ball and Pierce (Ryan) both went close for Celtic before Cappoquin/Railway went back in front.

The goal came in the 56th minute when a corner to Cappoquin/Railway saw the ball sent into the Celtic box and Ware shot home from close range. The final chances fell to Celtic and the Pierce twins. The first to Daryl who not for the first time was denied by Healy.

However this reporter has seen many fine saves by keepers from many clubs but with just one minute remaining Ryan Pierce got in behind the Cappoquin/Railway defence and with just Healy to beat his great effort looked to be a certain equaliser, but somehow Healy go a hand to the ball to push it over for a corner which was cleared. The final whistle sounded soon after and the cup was heading for Cappoquin.

A terrific game here and both sides could have won. There was no man of the match award but Healy would have taken it as he denied Celtic time and time again.

SCHOOLBOY LEAGUE RESULTS U14 CUP QUARTER-FINAL Clashmore Ramblers 0 Brideview United 3

The season continues to go well for Brideview United who move into the U14 cup semi-final with this hard fought win over Clashmore Ramblers. The home side took the lead early on but Brideview drew level with a goal from Adam Pratt with the sides level at half-time. Second half goals from Barra Alian and Adam Pratt sent Brideview United into the semi-final.

Brideview will now face Castlebridge Celtic in the semi-final with Mogeely awaiting the winner in the final. Both of these games will go ahead this week with the season set to finish on Saturday.

U12 CUP SEMI-FINAL Mogeely 3 Ardmore 0

Mogeely are through to the U12 Cup final, but not before they had to pull out all the stops against an Ardmore side without three of their top players as Logan Griffin, John O’Brien and Seamus Twomey were all unavailable on the night. Even without the three, Ardmore battled hard while they fell a goal behind in the 10th minute when Daniel Murray poked the ball home from close range. For the remainder of the half Mogeely were pushed back but Ardmore failed to break them down and it remained 1-0 at the interval.

On the restart Ardmore continued to press and were playing good football. Their momentum was broken ten minutes in when a through ball saw two Mogeely players get in on goal and with Ardmore adamant both were offside but the goal scored by Max Smiddy stood and that really was game over. Ardmore threw caution to the wind and while they had a few half chances, it was Mogeely that closed out the win with Eoin Brennan getting a third goal with ten minutes remaining as he ran onto a long kick from the keeper and turned the ball past the keeper.

Mogeely will now meet Ballyduff Rovers in the final on next Wednesday night in Leonard Fraser Park in Tallow at 7.15pm.

RESULTS PHONE IN NUMBER

All managers are asked to have the results phone number so that

they can text in half-time and fulltime scores along with their teams’ scorers and a brief report if they wish. Both sides must phone in with the information, but it is the home side who is responsible for the result. Again, please text information to this phone number 0830890833.

The leagues and cups are now almost all finished with the fixtures committee working hard to have it all done and dusted by the end of May. This is easier said than done however but if all the clubs help out then we should have all competitions successfully completed on time. As usual this time of year is very busy with school competition as well as GAA. If you throw in Communion/Confirmation, shift work along with Covid, then you can see how difficult it is for the fixtures secretary to get free dates to suit everyone. So far so good but clubs must play ball too.
