‘Long term solution’ sought for Killavullen Public Water Supply
A boil water notice has been in place for a month now for those on the Killavullen Public Water Supply.
An Irish Water spokesperson confirmed to The Avondhu this week that the boil water notice remains in place for the local supply and it is understood that in excess of 830 people are affected by the issue.
“The Boil Water Notice for the Killavullen Public Water Supply remains in place. The Boil Water Notice was put in place due to high levels of turbidity in the borehole supply causing the Killavullen Water Treatment Plant to shut down.
“Irish Water and Cork
County Council continue to work to rectify the issues at Killavullen Water Treatment Plant with a view to lifting the notice as quickly and as safely as possible,” the spokesperson said.
GOING ON “FOR FAR TOO LONG”
According to Cllr Frank O’Flynn, a meeting was held on Tuesday between Irish Water and the HSE, in which the decision was made to maintain the boil water notice for the short term.
“If the water supply exceeds 1 MTU, the boil water notice is put in place. Because the Killavullen Public Water Supply exceeds that, the decision was taken to keep the notice in place.
“I welcome that Irish Water is monitoring the situation and continually testing the water, but this is serious for Killavullen. I am asking Irish Water to come up with a solution as soon as possible. This is going on far too long now,” Cllr O’Flynn said, as he went on to call on Irish Water to put in place a long term solution.
“If this continues, they may even have to put in a line to connect with the Mallow supply which comes as far as Rahan,” he added.
At the same time, Cllr O’Flynn noted that Irish Water has ensured the water continues to meet all the quality standard in relation to E Coli and chlorine.
The boil water notice for Killavullen Public Water Supply was initially issued on May 2 and saw the Killavullen Water Treatment Plant shut down at the time for the same reason.
Another boil water notice was issued for the same water supply in Killavullen on February 28 this year, affecting some 810 people. At the time, the notice remained in place for 24 days before being lifted following the completion of remedial measures and the receipt of satisfactory monitoring results.
