Cork back on track in Allianz Div 2 FL

Cork 2-14 Kildare 0-7 This win for Cork in round 2 of the Allianz FL at Newbridge on Sunday gets the Rebels back on track. Before a large attendance, Cork got off to the best start and led all through.

Brian Hurley opened the scoring with Hurley being provider for Sean Powter who goaled after 14 minutes. Cork added two more points by Stephen Sherlock and Brian Hurley as they moved 1-3 to 0-0 clear. Hurley was again to the fore when he forced a ‘45 that Sherlock pointed. Colm O’Callaghan and Stephen Sherlock with points had Cork well ahead after 27 minutes. Kildare set up an attack by Darragh Malone, Paddy McDermott and Anthony Masterson that led to a Jimmy Hyland point. In injury time, Ben McCormack and Luke Fahy swopped points as Cork led at half-time 1-8 to 0-2.

Cork introduced Cathail O’Mahony for the second half. Kildare had an early point from Jimmy Hyland. Stephen Sherlock won a ‘mark’ and placed Brian O’Driscoll who kicked over. Darragh Kirwan replied for the Lilywhites. Stephen Sherlock kicked a great point entering the final quarter, now 1-10 to 0-4. Jack Robinson pointed for the Leinster side who were reduced to 14 players when Alex Beirne was red carded.

Cork did very well in the final quarter. Cathail O’Mahony soloed through and pointed off the crossbar. Brian Hurley pointed a Cork ‘45 with Jack Robinson replying. In the 58th minute good play by Tommy Walsh and Sean Powter led to a Brian O’Driscoll point.

Kildare lacked penetratio­n up front but never gave up. Tony Archbold worked well for Robinson who had his 3rd point. Conor Corbett came close to a late goal. Good play by Mattie Taylor and Cathail O’Mahony led to a foul on Ian Maguire that Brian Hurley pointed - 1-14 to 0-7.

In injury time, Cathail O’Mahony cut through with his effort coming back off the post to Colm O’Callaghan who placed O’Mahony for a goal.

Cork’s next game is away to Dublin.
