Tough championship draws in both hurling and football

-

The draws for the Avondhu Junior A hurling and football championships were made last Wednesday night in an event live streamed on the Avondhu GAA Website.

An earlier motion from the floor had suggested that the second teams of the Senior / Intermediate clubs will placed in an open draw and was resolutely passed, but in a bizarre coincidence the teams from Mallow, Fermoy, Kilshannig and Clyda Rovers all came out in Pot 1 of the draw. The draw for the Junior A football championship, featuring 10 teams are the following;

Group 1 - Mallow, Fermoy, Kilshannig and Clyda Rovers. Group 2 – Charleville, Killavullen and Ballyclough. Group 3 – Liscarroll, Kilworth and Ballyhooly. These games will be played in a round robin format, with games pencilled in for the week ending the 30th of July, 20th of August and the 10th of September. A separate draw later in the year will schedule the quarter finals and the semi-finals.

The Junior A hurling in 2022 was very competitive, with some cracking games and close encounters leading to very worthy finalists in Kilshannig and Liscarroll/ Churchtown Gaels. Kilshannig won out in North Cork and ultimately were a tad unlucky not to prevail in the county final when their more economical opponents, Erins Own, prevailed in a replay - Erins Own 1-30 Kilshannig 3-20 (after extra time).

The draws for the Junior A Hurling championship are as follows; Group 1 – Dromina, Kilshannig, Killavullen and Charleville. Group 2- Buttevant, Liscarroll / Churchtown Gaels, Ballyhea and Clyda Rovers. Group 3 – Ballyhooly, Araglin, Shanballymore and Harbour Rovers.

The games are scheduled to begin on the week ending the 6th of August, with the second games on the 13th of August and the final games on the 3rd September.

Tough to call the winners at this juncture, and with games tightly packed together injury to a key player could be detrimental to any team. Kilshannig have a fine panel of players in the hurling and must be favourites at this stage, but they will also be trying to make an impact on the Premier Intermediate football level next season after winning out against Aghabullogue in 2022 in the Cork County Intermediate A Football decider on a scoreline Kilshannig 1-16 Aghabullogue 0-10.

The football is no less intriguing with Charleville, beaten finalists in 2022, seeking revenge but operating on a tighter panel than many suspect, so it may not be as straight forward. Kilworth will be dangerous as well, with possibly Killavullen and Ballyhooly an outside bet. Though Killavullen are young in age, they demonstrated that they possess some fine players in winning the U21 B Football Championship final against Mitchelstown.
