Fundraiser set the launch, with special visitor Davy Fitz in tow

- MARIAN ROCHE

The first weekend in March should be an exciting time to be in Kildorrery, as fundraising for the village’s Astroturf Development Project kicks off with a 24-hour Ballathon, and Davy Fitz comes to town for a live Q&A to launch ‘Cork’s Fittest Superstars’.

This summer, Kildorrery will be hosting the toughest fitness challenge around, where teams of four will compete for a €5,000 prize. The launch of the competition takes place on 4th March in The Creamery Store in the village. Beginning at 7.30pm, the night promises to hold plenty of fun and frolics.

Preceding the launch is the first fundraiser for Kildorrery’s Astroturf development. The 24 hour-Ballathon kicks off at 6pm on Friday, 3rd March, and the sound of sliotar-slapping off the hurling wall won’t stop for 24 hours as all age groups come together to literally keep the momentum going. The end of the Ballathon will coincide with the launch of ‘Cork’s Fittest Superstars’.

Speaking with The Avondhu, Peter O’Brien says that while grants will be available, it’s up to the association to raise about €150,000 for the all-weather pitch. All funds are ringfenced for the Astroturf development only, and the Ballathon represents the first effort. A golf classic is planned for later in the year, and all donations and support are warmly welcomed.

“We’ll be by the hurling wall at the GAA pitch, with all age groups taking part across the club as well as past players, coaches, mentors; we’ll need a couple of hundred people to take part.”

CORKS FITTEST SUPERSTARS

Sponsored by Sorensen Civil Engineering, ‘Cork’s Fittest Superstars’ will take place at Kildorrery’s GAA grounds in early July and will be officially launched with an in-person Q&A with Davy Fitzgerald in The Creamery Store on Saturday, 4th March at 7.30pm.

On the day itself this summer, teams of four will be put through their paces by Davy Fitz and his team. Scheduled for July 1st, organisers say they can’t reveal too much, but promise that the infamous ‘hang tough’ and ‘finishing ramp’ will form part of the challenge. Teams will be completing Davy’s gruelling obstacle course in the fastest time to secure coveted places in the final. The top eight teams will tough it out for the top prize of €5,000.

As always, Davy Fitz will bring all of his famed passion, intensity and tenaciousness to personally coach each team through the course.

“I can’t wait for the Kildorrery competition; it’s going to be epic. It’s an unbelievable opportunity for teams all over Cork and Munster to try their hand at our tactical ‘Fittest Family’ style competition. I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in with Kildorrery for this fantastic event”.

Teams will be made up of four participants and must include at least one female, and one person over the age of 35. Unlike the TV programme, this competition is open to groups of friends and work colleagues, not just families. All members must be at least 18 years of age for insurance reasons.

Team entries will be capped, so make sure you act fast. For more information on Cork’s Fittest Superstars, or to request a registration pack, WhatsApp or text 087-9224961.
