Jimmy Hanlon RIP

-

The club would like to extend deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the late Jimmy Hanlon RIP who passed away peacefully on Monday night. A club vice president, Jimmy was a former player, trainer, coach, mentor and officer at both adult and juvenile sections of the club.

Part of the historic County Junior hurling winning panel in 1967, Jimmy was goalkeeper on the 1980 Junior hurling team who lost out in the county final to Newcestown. Fearless as the last line of defence, in that final Jimmy brilliantly saved a penalty effort from Cork star at the time, Tim Crowley, with the ball deflected over for a point.

Jimmy was a very successful, dedicated and committed coach and team mentor over a long number of years, encouraged and developed many players under his watch and tenure. Jimmy gave many a juvenile their first start and saw many progress to become established junior, intermediate and senior players for various teams be it club, division or county. Guiding the U12s to a historic County double in 1986 was surely one of the highlights of a proud Kilworth GAA association.

Before there was ever such a title as Coaching Officer Jimmy was the driving force in underage coaching in Kilworth for many years. He held the position of club secretary in 1977 and 1978 and was assistant secretary for a period in the 1980s while also holding the position of juvenile secretary and juvenile coach.

Always a pleasure to meet and have a chat with, there are a lot of us past and present club members of an era that own him a debt of gratitude. The club has lost another great clubman, a great character and a gentleman, Jimmy will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

OPENING ROUND DEFEATS

Our junior and intermediate hurlers were both defeated in their respective opening round league games last weekend. Both teams were well in contention at halftime, but the games shifted in our opponents favour on the restarts.

EIRE ÓG DOMINATE SECOND HALF Eire Óg 1-25 Kilworth 1-15

Eire Óg put in a powerful second half performance to emerge deserving winners in this Red FM Division 3 Hurling League game played at Ovens last Sunday afternoon.

The opening quarter was a tight affair with the sides level on a number of occasions. A Brian Sheehan goal in the 25th minute put some daylight between the sides as Kilworth opened up a 5-point advantage 1-11 to 0-9 at the interval. We completely lost our shape in the second half with Eire Óg going on to dominate, taking an early foothold in the half and drew level 1-11 to 0-14 by the 40th minute. A green flag was to follow and a 5 point half time deficit was now a 3-point lead 1-11 to 1-14 for the Muskerry side.

Our opening second half score came in the 47th minute with the Ovens men going on to outscore us 0-11 to 0-3 for the remainder of the game. While the lads battled hard for long periods we weren’t able to make any real impact in the second half. Momentum was with a physical Eire Óg side who were far sharper on the day. Next up us a home tie against Blackrock under lights next Thursday night, March 16th.
