Kilworth bottle bank ‘a complicated matter’

- MARIAN ROCHE

The fact that the bottle bank in Kilworth has been closed to public access for at least one month was raised this week at a council meeting, as Cllr Frank O’Flynn said he had been contacted ‘by quite a number of residents’ in the village, wondering why.

Recently, another local had contacted The Avondhu, saying that they believed the bins to have been closed for about two months. As the family live outside of the village and are frequent users of the facility, their bin provider won’t supply them with a glass bin as they only supply them in urban areas.

“It’s not the first time, and we had the same problem last year.

I have been going into Fermoy, but those bins are normally full - I cut my hand trying to put bottles in”.

DISCUSSIONS ONGOING

As previously reported by The Avondhu, the recycling bins, which are currently located behind the Centra shop in the carpark area, have been faced towards the wall with a notice saying they are ‘closed for cleaning’. A sign nearby indicates that it is Cork County Council who are responsible for their maintenance - or, at least, it is they who are to be contacted if the bins are full.

When queried by TheA vondhu, the council said: “The Bring Bank facility in Kilworth is located on private property and Cork County Council is in discussion with the property owner regarding some issues around its operation. It is hoped the site will reopen soon.

The owner of the shop said he had ‘no comment’ to make to TheAvondhu on the matter.

At Monday’s Northern Committee meeting, Cllr Frank O’Flynn commended the Kilworth Tidy Towns group and the community at large for doing ‘great work’, but said that this was ‘the big issue’ for the past month.

“It’s a complicated matter, and we’ll keep the pressure on,” Louis Duffy of Cork County Council said.
