Our academy is back this weekend
We are delighted to announce that our underage academy are back training this weekend. Boys born in 2016 and 2017 will play football and hurling together on Saturday mornings at 9:30am in Watergrasshill pitch and Wednesday evenings at 6.30pm in Glenville pitch.
Our academy is a great way to have fun and make new friends so if your son would like to give it a go, pop along on Saturday or Wednesday and we’re sure they’ll have a great time. An Cupán Tae will be open for tea and coffee, we’d be delighted to welcome new parents to get involved - no experience necessary as we’ve always plenty of qualified coaches on hand to help you get involved.
WEEKEND FIXTURES CURTAILED
Of the four games originally scheduled for last weekend only one went ahead, with U14 and junior games falling foul of the weather and the U18 game postponed due to a bereavement in the Carrigaline club, to whom we offer our condolences.
Only the Intermediate League game went ahead last weekend. Given the weather in the past number of weeks, our pitch wouldn’t have been playable had the previous 3 games been played.
INTERMEDIATE HURLING D5 LEAGUE Watergrasshill 2-12 Castlemartyr 0-7
With Daire O’Leary on intercounty duty for Cork, manager Pat Heffernan made some positional changes in defence on Sunday and was delighted with the reaction of the lads, especially Mick O’Driscoll, Dylan Roche and James Gowen who were rock-solid throughout. Given how soft the pitch was and the amount of rain that fell, it was always going to be a tough day for the players.
Castlemartyr started quickly with a point from play after just 2 minutes, but it was the only occasion when they held the lead as once Seán Desmond rattled the net in the 9th minute, the result was never in doubt. With that goal on the board, we led 1-5 to 0-3 after 15 minutes and despite the use of a sweeper from Castlemartyr, massive work rate from Brendan Lehane and Ian O’Callaghan helped Desmond to his second goal of the day on 23 minutes and the lead was stretched to 2-7 to 0-4.
With the half-time score 2-9 to 0-5 in Watergrasshill’s favour the bench was emptied and the like of Ricken, Lehane and Desmond were given a well-deserved cup of tea. It was great to see the younger lads like Liam Foley, Ciarán O’Leary and Mick O’Driscoll perform so well at this level and it certainly augers well for the future.
The second half didn’t quite live up to the level of the first, but that’s credit to Aiden Foley and Brian Fenton who were determined to keep Castlemartyr at bay. Watergrasshill just shaded the second half 0-3 to 0-2, running out winners on a final score of 2-13 to 0-7. A good solid performance from the lads and hopefully they can keep that momentum up in their next outing against Cloughduv on April 2nd.
2023 MEMBERSHIP NOW OPEN
Our 2023 club membership is now open and we would encourage everyone to renew as soon as possible. Our playing, non-playing and social membership options are available again this year. It’s not just important for players to complete their membership for insurance and registration purposes, but social and non-playing members are just as important to ensure we have up to date member numbers, this help with Capital Grant applications to GAA organisations and external private funding to help us continue to develop the best possible facilities for our community.
This year we have simplified the registration process by moving to the Foireann platform, which is provided by the GAA. Everyone will already have profiles set up on Foireann from the days of Covid health questionnaires, but anyone who needs extra support to resister can just contact any club officer and we’ll gladly help you out.
REBELS’ BOUNTY 2023
The Rebels Bounty draw is an initiative of ‘One Cork’ to give clubs a significant opportunity to raise funds. Proceeds from every ticket sold above minimum targets go directly to our clubs in Watergrasshill and Glenville. We had a fantastic response in 2021 and tickets are now up for renewal.
We are asking all members and supporters to renew again this year and support this very important fundraised for both clubs. If you need any assistance, feel free to contact Brian or Paud or please email rebelsbounty@gaa.ie or hillglenvillerebelsbounty@gmail.com. Your support is greatly appreciated with much needed funds going directly into supporting your club and your community, míle buiochas duitse go léir.
