GAIN Mares Final - the big attraction at

- JOHN AHERN

With an improving weather situation as the week progresses, things are looking up for the committee in charge of Ballynoe Point-to-Points.

Set in ' strong racing country', the Ballynoe Point-to-Points are traditionally well supported with a big selling point being the 'GAIN Mares Final'.

GAIN MARES FINAL, A WONDERFUL SUCCESS STORY

Point-to-point committees are always trying out new concepts, however, few have been as successful as the GAIN Mares Final, which was first run in 1987.

Since then, the event has gone from strength to strength - all of which is good news for the local committee.

As in previous years, owners, trainers and jockeys will be leaving no stone unturned in attempting to win 'the big one'.

A victory in the east Cork townland of Garryanne, adds significantly to the value of a mare.

2023 - ULTRA SUCCESSFUL TO DATE

To date, 2023 has been a great year for the point-to-point scene. Excellent courses, good weather and bumper crowds all indicate that this ultimate countryside sport is very much alive and kicking.

As the horseracing world winds down after the highs of Cheltenham, it's worth reflecting on the pivotal role played by point-to-points in the development of a successful steeplechaser/ hurdler.

In several instances, Cheltenham success will have started at a point-to-point venue in Ireland.
