Missed chances costly

-

We travelled to Ballyanly to face Inniscarra on St Patrick’s morning in the Div 3 hurling league. After an opening round loss to Blackrock we bounced back to defeat Bandon at home last day out. Conditions were tough for both teams. A heavy pitch along with a strong breeze made it a hard battle.

Inniscarra played with the wind in the first half and opened the scoring after 5 mins after both teams had hit wides. David Morrison had a good chance of a goal after 8 minutes when he rounded his man. His defender recovered to half block him down and the shot rolled to the keeper who gathered and cleared his lines. Alan Fenton opened our account with 2 frees in a row. Mistakes and wides from both sides marked the middle period of the 1st half as both teams struggled to score from play.

The home side scored the next 3 points from play even though Castlelyons had another goal chance from James Kearney who failed to find the net and allowed Inniscarra to race down and score a point themselves. Barry Murphy scored our first point from play after 21 minutes with a well taken point from 35 yards out. Inniscarra pounced to score two points from play afterwards to 2 points clear. Alan Fenton scored the last point of the 1st half from a free after the hard working David Morrison was fouled on the 21 yard line.

The rain began to fall for the second half and the scrappy nature of the game continued. Alan Fenton raised two more white flags from frees but soon after Inniscarra scored the first of their two goals with an overlap and a low shot to beat Jack Barry in goals. David Morrison had another chance for a goal after Colm Spillane broke through and found him with a hand pass 5 yards from goal.

The Inniscarra keeper smothered the ball and won a free out to deny us again. The home team added two more points from play to place 4 points between the sides. Colm Spillane responded with a point from the 45 yard line and Castlelyons upped their game to get themselves back into it. James Kearney shot over a point from an acute angle to leave 2 points between the teams.

The pivotal moment in the game was about to happen and Inniscarra scored a killer goal after 50 minutes. A looping shot deceived the Castlelyons defence and the Inniscarra attacker was able to get to the ball before Jack first-time the ball to the net. Alan scored two more frees but Inniscarra saw out the game, scoring two more points as we failed to crack their defence and score a needed goal.

Full-time result after a frustrating game was Castlelyons 0-12 Inniscarra 2-11.

LAST CHANCE FOR REBELS’ BOUNTY TICKETS

We have only 1 week left to buy Rebels’ Bounty tickets. The draw is becoming a key fundraiser for clubs like us.

The funding from this draw contributed €8,000 to the development loan repayments and we were able to place €11,500 into the contribution scheme for the new playing facilities. This is a huge amount of money raised and makes a monumental difference to the future of the club. We want to thank you all for the generous support given to the GAA club and your support of the Rebels’ Bounty in the past. The draw has over €500,000 in prize money, 12 draws in the year and with over 30 prizes within each draw.

There have been some sizeable Castlelyons winners over the last few years so the only way of being in with a chance to win is to buy a ticket. If you wish to buy a ticket you can contact Mick Spillane at 086-8196232 or visit gaacork.ie/ rebelsbounty and make sure to put Castlelyons as your club!

CHELTENHAM BUSTER

Thanks to everyone who took part in our Cheltenham Buster competition last week. We had 150 people picking selections for the races. It was a hard week to pick winners but there were a few shrewd tipsters out there. The overall winner was Mick Spillane, with daughter Louise pushing him close to take 2nd place. Padraic Cullinane took the third place prize. There were also numerous daily prize winners.

Congratulations to all the prize winners. Also, thanks to Liam Moroney and Mike Spillane for all the organising that went into the competition.

CORK V KILKENNY

Best of luck to the Cork Senior Hurlers as they take on Kilkenny in the league semi-final in Nowlan Park. Manager Pat Ryan has tried many different faces throughout the league and has given our own Niall O’Leary the privilege of captaining the side on 3 occasions. Hopefully, we can keep building on our promising start to the year and bring back a league title.
