First win for Louth over Cork since 1957

- BY PADDY RYAN Referee: Fergal Kelly (Longford).

Louth 1-10 Cork 0-10

Cork's last defeat to Louth was 66 years ago on September 22, 1957 when they defeated the Rebels in the All-Ireland SFC final by 1-9 to 1-7. On Sunday, Cork travelled to DEFY Pairc Mhuire, Ardee for a meeting with the home side before a very large attendance in the Allianz FL.

Had Cork taken the points on the day, they would still have been in with a chance of qualifying, depending on the result of Derry and Dublin's last game.

Cork did well early on and were ahead 0-7 to 0-2 after 25 minutes. The sides were level twice earlier. Cork could have had a goal when Sean Powter won a turnover and placed Colm O'Callaghan, who parted to Sherlock but the ball did not actually get to him. Louth keeper James Califf saved well from Chris Og Jones.

Louth had a penalty from Ryan Burns saved by Micheal A Martin, but Burns goaled from the rebound. At half-time Cork led 0-8 to 1-4.

Stephen Sherlock had an early pointed free. Louth dominated this second half but they found scores very hard to secure in the 3rd quarter. Luke Fahy pointed for Cork in the 17th minute of the second half, now 0-10 to 1-5. The Rebels failed to score again.

Louth used the short passing to great effect and had two points that levelled affairs, 1-7 to 0-10. Ciaran Downey edged the winners ahead after good play by Oisin McGuinness and Conor Early. Further pressure saw Tommy Durnan point after good play by Conor Lennon and Ciaran Murphy.

Cork tried very hard to get back on terms, however the Louth defence did well and they had their 5th point by Kieran Downey on the run, as they held out for a win.
