Great night at Juvenile medal presentation event

-

We held our Juvenile medal presentation night last Sunday night in the KGK Hall, Knockanore with our U12s, U13s, U15s and U16s all receiving their county medals from last season. All our U6s, U8s and U10s who played in a number of WLGFA blitzes in 2022 also received their medals for what was also a fantastic year for our younger teams. Our special guest on the night was former Cork All-Star forward Orla Finn who presented almost 100 girls with their medals on the night!

Shamrocks U14 All-Ireland medallist Emma Power was given the job of presenting all our younger teams with a special Shamrocks chocolate bar which proved to be just as popular as the medals! With both the Munster and All-Ireland U14 cups in attendance the evening also offered the opportunity to honour the achievements of Emma who received a presentation in recognition of her part in helping Waterford capture an U14 All-Ireland in 2022 as she kicked 1-01 in the All-Ireland final against Tyrone and was top scorer for the team from corner forward.

With all our teams now back in training we look forward to hopefully having another great season ahead.

CAPPOQUIN ST PATRICK’S DAY PARADE

After a three-year absence due to Covid-19 the St Patrick’s Day parades made a welcome return this year with the girls from our U6 to U11 teams taking part in the Cappoquin St Patrick’s Day parade.

The Shamrocks’ girls certainly got into the spirit of the occasion as they were decked out in their Shamrocks green and white colours and weren’t shy in making sure that everyone knew who they were as they paraded with the trophies won by the club in 2022! Well done to all the girls who took part and for their coaches who made it possible by parading with them.

WATERFORD U16S

It was another busy weekend for the Waterford U16 teams who hosted Kerry in Ardmore last Sunday afternoon in miserable weather conditions.

First up was the U16B team who included Shamrocks players Deirdre Roache at fullback and Emma Power at centre forward as they took on their Kerry counterparts. Waterford having led for almost the entirety of the game had to hold off a late Kerry comeback as they forced a draw with the score at the full-time whistle: Waterford 3-06 Kerry 2-09. Both Shamrocks girls made big contributions with two of Waterford goals coming from the Shamrocks players courtesy of a brilliant Emma Power effort and a Deirdre Roche penalty.

Later in the afternoon the Waterford U16A team which included Shamrocks players Amelie Quann and Caoimhe Whelan gave themselves a mountain to climb in the second half as they trailed Kerry by twelve points at one stage and despite a brilliant comeback, they fell short with the final score: Kerry 3-11 Waterford 2-09.

WATERFORD U14S

It was also a big weekend for Shamrocks U14 player Katelyn McCarthy who lined out for Waterford for the first time in the Munster LGFA U14 Blitz in Mallow last Saturday. The Waterford teams acquitted themselves very well as they took on the other five Munster counties with Katelyn very much to the fore with some super performances for her team throughout the day.

WATERFORD SENIORS

The Waterford Seniors produced another battling away performance in Ballinlough last Sunday afternoon as they edged out current All-Ireland and National League champions Meath by a one-point margin. After a poor start the Waterford girls staged a second half comeback and took the lead which they never relinquished with just ten minutes remaining.

Central to the result were Shamrocks players Catherine Hynes and Neesha Whelan who were both introduced off the bench in the second half and put in strong performances to ensure the points went the way of the away side. With a place in the League final out of reach Waterford’s last game is a tough away trip to Dublin.

ADULT LEAGUE

Our first team to return to competition will be our Juniors who travel to take on Dungarvan next Sunday morning in round 1 of the Adult League. With a bye in round 2 our first home game is against Drum Rangers in round 3 on April 9th. In round 4 we take on St Olivers away before finishing with a round 5 game at home to Comeragh Rangers.

U16 CHAMPIONSHIP

Our U16s also kick off their Championship next week when we host Stradbally in round 1 of the U16 Championship next Monday evening, March 27th at 6.30pm in Knockanore. Our division also includes games in April against Gaultier, Ballysaggart and Erins Own.
