Castletownroche NS - a comprehensive educational experience

- JOHN AHERN

Incelement weath

er on Tuesday didn’t stop parents and prospective students attending the Castletownroche National School Open Night. This was an opportunity to meet staff and pupils, while also seeing at first hand what the school has to offer in terms of facilities.

GREAT STRIDES

Following significant investment, Castletownroche National School now has excellent facilities when it comes to classrooms and recreational space. This, combined with a variety of technological options, makes for an environment where girls and boys can prosper academically and socially.

It’s a very progressive school as is evidenced through the provision of a homework/ breakfast club. With regard to technology and IT, the school recently took possession of 30-plus computers and laptops courtesy of Eli Lilly, who are delighted to be associated with the north Cork school.

THE BASICS AND BEYOND

While the school is committed to the basics (reading, writing and arithmetic), it also finds time for a range of extracurricular activities, which helps broaden the horizons of students. A 200 metre running/ cycle track ensures physical fitness isn’t overlooked and when it comes to leaving a positive impression, the school has numerous achievements in the areas of environmental issues, embracing heritage and instilling a love of the Irish language.

STUDENTS TO THE FORE

What was clear from the Open Night that pupils (junior infants to sixth class) are at the centre of what motivates teachers and staff. Equipped with their tablets and laptops, pupils gave visitors a detailed account of what Castletownroche National School has to offer. The school also has an active students’ council, a forum that has been enthusiastically embraced.

REWARDS

The expression ‘Mol an oige agus tiocfaidh si’ is frequently used to highlight the value of praise when it comes to encouraging students and this philosophy continues to work wonders in Castletownroche National School. Occasionally, exceptional conduct is recognised in a more practical fashion and at all times, the school will have a stash of locally ‘Animal’ and ‘Fredo’ bars to reward deserving recipients. It all makes for a positive, enlightened and progressive atmosphere in which students are excelling.

An open and friendly school, it is currently enrolling for September and welcomes expressions of interest.
