Full weekend of fun ahead at Glanfest

- MARIAN ROCHE

The village of Glanworth can look forward to a festival where there’s “something for everyone” for the May bank holiday weekend, according to co-ordinator Stephen Dunne.

The Glanworth GAA and Community Festival ‘ Glanfest’ is being held at the GAA grounds from April 27th to 30th, and aims to encapsulate both the community spirit and the local talent of the area. Now in its second year, Mr Dunne says the organisers aim to make this 2023’s festival equal, if not better, than last year’s.

“This is an event for all that’s good in the parish and the surrounding areas. We had great success last year, and we have high hopes of success this year too”.

The excitement kicks off on Thursday 27th with Fun Bingo with Tommy Fitzgibbon, and continues into Friday evening with a Grassroots Interview/ Preview night featuring Donal Óg Cusack, Briege Corkery and John Mullane.

A full day of fun on Saturday begins with the Owenie McAuliffe Football 7s, where 14 teams are already lined up to take part. An afternoon BBQ is followed by music from Ciarán O’Gorman and The Fogues, with a DJ playing til late. Sports fans won’t be forced to watch all the matches on their phones either, as all the inter-county games will be screened live on a big screen.

On Sunday, a Family Fun Day and Farmers' Market will be at the GAA grounds from 11am, and at 1pm a memorial ‘Game for James’ takes place between Mitchelstown RFC and Glanworth GAA playing compromise rules. A ‘ Mother’s and Others’ Blitz follows, with another later afternoon BBQ to follow.

At 4pm, the Cork v Waterford match will be on the big screen followed by a celebratory (!) trad session at 6pm. From 7pm, music will be provided late into the night by Kevin O’Brien, Deuces Wild and a DJ.

With 18 stalls already booked in for the Farmers' Market, stallholders are asked to contact Ciarán Cotter on 086 3761816 for a pitch.

All events will be taking place at the GAA grounds, which is fully and strictly licensed. ID will be required, and all events are over-18s only from 7pm. Tickets at various price points for the events are available on eventbrite.ie, with a three-day pass costing €40.
