Junior hurlers off the mark

-

Kilworth 3-18 Liscarroll Churchtown Gaels 3-13

Our junior hurlers, with a good blend of youth and experience, had five points to spare over Liscarroll/ Churchtown Gaels at our own venue last Saturday evening in the Cavanagh’s of Fermoy D2HL. Following an opening round defeat away to Buttevant, the lads bounced back with a deserved win.

Leading by 2 points 2-8 to 2-6 at the break, Kilworth extended the advantage in the second half to win by 3-18 to 3-13. While our full forward line trio of Cormac Donnellan (0-3) Tom Twomey (2-0) and M Sheehan (1-7) accounted for an impressive 3-10 of our tally, we had a good spread of scorers throughout the field. We had three U18s on the starting fifteen with another coming on, which is an encouraging sign.

Next up for the lads is the long trip to Newtownshandrum on Saturday, April 15th.

MINOR HURLERS OVERCOME MILLSTREET Kilworth Araglen Og 4-13 Millstreet 2-5

4 goals in the opening quarter set the tone for the Div. 1 North Hurling League game which was played in Kilworth on Wednesday, March 29th last. With the sides level 0-1 each after 5 minutes, our score coming from Conor Twomey, there were 3 goals scored in a pulsating two minutes spell. Eoghan Leddy and Killian Watts netting for Kilworth Araglen Og to lead 2-1 to 0-1 before Millstreet responded in the next passage of play to leave it 2-1 to 1-1 after 7 minutes.

Points from Liam Og Hegarty and Killian Watts were followed by Eoghan Leddy’s second green flag of the game and Kilworth Araglen Og led 3-3 to 1-1 after 11 first half minutes. Liam Og Hegarty with a bullet on the run billowed the net to make it 4-3 to 1-1 at the end of the first quarter. Points from Oisín Farrell Carey and Liam Og Hegarty 0-4 (1 ‘65’) in addition to 2 white flags from the Duhallow side left it 4-8 to 1-3 at half-time.

Millstreet opened the second half scoring with a point from play before points from Liam Og Hegarty, Oisin Farrell Carey with his second of the game, Jason Hynes now operating in the middle of the field and the hard-working Darragh Sheehan extended our advantage to 4-12 to 1-4. FÉ16S GET THE BEST OF BALLYCASTLE GAELS Kilworth Araglen Og 4-14 Ballycastle Gaels 2-12

With their first football game postponed due the weather the previous week, the Fé16 hurlers opened their season with an 8 point win over Ballycastle Gaels in this Div. 2 North Hurling League tie played at Araglin on Sunday morning last. A strong team performance saw Kilworth Araglen Og run out 8 point winners (report in next week's edition).

FÉ14 C3 HURLING V KILTHA OG Kiltha Óg 1-10 Kilworth Araglen Óg 0-3

On a glorious Sunday morning in Castlemartyr, the Kilworth Araglen Og Fé14s took on Kiltha Óg (Castlemartyr / Dungourney) in the second round of the C3 Hurling League.

Our lads started well in the first half but struggled to keep possession in the opponent’s half. Unfortunately, we were down some of our key forwards and lacked the fire power to make the difference on the scoreboard despite some reasonable possession. As our lads looked to get grips with the game, Kiltha Óg started to pull away, tacking on point after point.

In the second half, we had a much-improved work rate, giving the opposition much less time on the ball. Our backs continued to play well and found our forwards in many instances. Despite our best efforts, Kiltha Óg ran out winners on a scoreline of 1-10 to 0-3.

Squad: James Kenneally, Paddy O’Brien, Ciaran Crowley, Peter Hynes, Sean Kelleher, Ruairi McCallum, Justin Gowen, Ben Feehan, Sean O’Loughlin, Harry O’Brien, Kuba Ciosmak, Bailey Browne, Darragh Cooney, Oisín Dillion, Eoin Toland. Subs (all used) William Nash-Khan, Tadhg Aherne, Darragh Lynch, Jack Condon.

FÉ14 P2 HURLERS GET OFF TO WINNING START Kilworth Araglen Og 3-14 Youghal 1-7

A superb performance from our U14 (P2) hurlers saw us get the better of Youghal in Araglin on Monday evening last. Youghal had recently won the corresponding football tie so our lads were well up for a sharp response and they delivered. From the outset, our lads produced a great level of work and aggression giving their opponents no time on the ball. Any ball delivered into their forward line was of low quality or dealt with quickly by our backs. Youghal’s efforts to barricade their full back line with a sweeper worked in the early stages.

However, once our lads got to grips with it, long balls were delivered down the channels, bypassing the sweeper and allowing us to build up an early lead. Youghal made several positional changes looking to get back into the match, but they were unable to match the speed, support, and aggression our lads showed throughout. Although it was our first competitive hurling game for the P2 team, they showed a high degree of maturity throughout in what was an impressive team performance. We ran out deserved winners by 3-14 to 1-7.

Squad: Darragh Collins, Ruairi McCallum, Jack Cotter, Ciaran Crowley, Harry O’Brien, Evan Gowen, Ben Feehan, Oran Hegarty, Sean O’Riordan, Bailey Browne, Danny Kenneally, Killian Ball, Luke Browne, Conor Lynch, Paudie Hurley. Subs: Kuba Ciosmak (used), Sean Kelleher, Darragh Cooney, Oisín Dillion, James Kenneally

FÉ10S IN FERMOY

Well done to the Fé10 hurlers who put in a great effort in their opening Go Games fixture against

Fermoy, which was played in the St Colmans grounds on Saturday morning last. As with the majority of pitches at the minute, the ground was heavy, however, two evenly matched groups made light of this to produce some excellent displays with very little between the teams throughout the 4 matches. The workrate was very high from all players with both sets of coaches very happy with the positive start to the season from their charges.

The boys to take part on Sunday were Hugo Sarsfield, Jack Brokenshire, Harry Aherne, Aidan Tobin, Max McGrath, Ruairí Kenneally, Colm Fitzgerald, Ryan O'Dwyer, Leo Simmons, Dillon O'Regan, Donagh Murray, Cormac Lysaght, Joey Kiernan, Tomás Dennigan, Max Browne and Alex Bracken.

FÉ9 HURLING V BRIDE ROVERS

Our Fé9 hurlers also played their first game of the year on Saturday morning last when they took on a strong Bride Rovers side in Rathcormac. Go Games rules change at U9 where the boys move away from ground hurling and are allowed to strike the ball from the hand. This new rule allied to the early season cobwebs were evident early on, however, as the games progressed (each player had 3 games) our lads improved and showed a lot of potential.

Well done to all the boys who took part and be sure to get the hurleys out as often as possible during the week as there’s no substitute for practice.

The following were involved on Saturday morning; Odhran O'Donoghue, Charlie O'Donoghue, Cillian McLoughlin, Bobby Hegarty, James Hegarty, Tom Aherne, Thomas O'Sullivan, Dylan Kenny, Hugh Hickey, Shayne Cremin, Jamie Evans, Ollie Higgins, Shane Sweetnam, Liam Bonner, Tom Kenny, Ben Buckley, Liam Fleming, Oisin Ryan, Luke Kenneally, Noah Dunne, Luke McCrea and Ethan O'Donoghue.

FÉ8S IN RATHCORMAC

Our Fé8 hurlers were also in Rathcormac on Saturday morning on the invitation from the home club Bride Rovers to take part in a hurling blitz. We had two seven a side teams playing three games each, all against the hosts. The first two games were ground hurling only with the third allowing the lads to play air hurling as they call it themselves, this was the first time the lads were allowed to lift and strike the ball so they were quite excited beforehand with all doing really well.

Huge thanks to Bride Rovers U8 management for organising a very enjoyable morning's hurling and we will return the invitation during the year.

Players present: Micheál O'Brien, Jack Kenny, Jack McNamara, Charlie Clifford, Charlie Aherne, Oisin Looney, Dan McGrath, Kyle Condon, Aodan Dingivan, Paidi O'Brien, Eoin Tobin, Art O'Meara, James O'Callaghan and Brendan Hurley.

FÉ14S FALL FOUL OF THE WEATHER AGAIN

Unfortunately, the Fé14s first game of the last week, which was to be a P2 hurling fixture in Kilworth against Glen Rovers on Thursday last, had to be postponed on the morning of the game due to an unplayable pitch. This game will most likely be refixed for mid May. ORAN HEGARTY SELECTED FOR

PRIMARY GAME

Huge congratulations to our Fe13 and 14 player Oran Hegarty who has been selected to represent the Cork hurlers in the Primary Game at half-time in this year's senior hurling championship tie between Cork and Clare. Oran will represent Scoil na nÓg of Glanmire, where he is currently attending.

Congratulations also to Bailey Browne who will represent Scoil Mhuire of Araglin in the same game. Best of luck boys.
