‘GLANFEST 23’ - the countdown is on!

-

9pm: Kicks off with Fun Bingo with Tommy ‘Boon’ Fitzgibbon with a minimum jackpot of €200. Tommy has a brilliant character and make this event what it is! It’s great fun and takes place in The Harbour Bar in Glanworth village

FRIDAY

7pm: Our ‘ Grassroots’ interview night takes place in the club grounds where Briege Corkery, John Mullane and Dónal Óg Cusack take to the stage.

The aim of this event is to bring top class GAA personalities with much decorated careers to local GAA audiences. Preview of Cork vs Waterford Munster Championship as well!

Briege Corkery has won a record 18 All Ireland medals for Cork between camogie and ladies football. She was known for having an outstanding turn of pace and work-rate with no shortage of skill!

Dónal Óg Cusack is a regular to RTE panels and is one of the greatest hurling goalkeepers of all time. He has won 3 All-Irelands, 2 All-Stars and 5 Munster Championships with Cork. Sometimes deemed as controversial, Dónal Óg is not one to shy away from asking tough questions and gives a great insight into what it takes to win an All-Ireland.

John Mullane the Déise man. A very charismatic and colourful character. John is widely considered one of, if not the best player Waterford has ever produced. Winning a total of 5 All-Stars (a record for a Waterford player), Mullane is probably one of the best players ever to not win the Liam MacCarthy Cup. He is considered a legend of Waterford GAA.

This promises to be a great night. We are running a free draw for two tickets for our Friday night event. If interested in winning the tickets, answer the following question ‘Where is Glanfest taking place’ and text your answer to James on 086-2213082. Winner picked Wednesday, 26th April.

SATURDAY

We have 15 teams partaking in the Owenie McAuliffe 7’s this year. Owenie was a super Glanworth player and real role model for the GAA. A Cork player of much distinction, this tournament is named in his memory.

This kicks off at the earlier than advertised time of 10am due to high demand. Teams from all over Munster are coming for men’s and ladies football!

We have BBQ with Bernie at 2pm or maybe earlier for any peckish players or supporters!

Liver intercounty games will be broadcast on our big screen with Dublin vs Kildare in the football and Limerick vs Clare in Munster Hurling Championship at 7pm.

We have the highly talented Ciaran O’Gorman playing from 8pm. This guy is much sought after and has a big following. He’s a big Ballygiblin fan too but a secret supporter of the Glanworth teams he said!

The Fogues are just back from an Ireland & European tour and are starting their summer gigs at home in the parish. These guys are top class. They bring high energy and variety to each performance and are a must see. They hit the stage from 9pm and to see us out on the night we have a DJ afterwards.

SUNDAY

Our Family Fun Day and Farmers’ Market starts at 11am on Sunday. We have 20 stalls already lined up with a huge variety on offer from local producers and makers. Anyone else interested in having a stall please contact Ciaran Cotter on 086-3761816.

The Family Fun Day is going to be mega! Bouncy castles, merry-go-rounds, kids races, GAA games, and much more on offer.

1pm sees our ‘ Game for James’. This is a compromised rules game between Mitchelstown RFC and Glanworth GAA selection. James Meaney was a colossus in our club and also in Mitchelstown RFC circles. He encapsulated all that was good about grassroots sport and was a gentleman to boot. This game is in honour of him and is the second time it has been played. There is a great bond created through James’ legacy between both clubs. Be sure to come down for some big hits. The pace of play should be easy to keep track of too!

2pm: And what about the parents? Mothers And Others football takes place from 2pm. We have 5 – 6 teams lined up to play a few short games. This is bound to draw a crowd and is a great social game. BBQ with Bernie from about 2pm to keep everyone going! 4pm: Our big screen will show the Rebels vs Waterford in the Munster Hurling Championship Live.

6pm: We will have local traditional music acts live.

7pm: Kevin O’Brien, one of the lead members of band ‘Neon Cars’ and a super musician. He has played Indiependence, Cyprus Avenue and many more with Neon Cars. This guy is sure to get the crowd going and was outstanding in ‘Glanfest 22’ 9pm: Deuces Wild see us out after a fun filled and hectic weekend. These guys are simply outstanding. Mattie Flynn hailing from Glanworth is one of the key men for this band and brings his skills to the forefront for Deuces Wild, who brought the house down last year. They have recently released the cover of the song ‘This is the Life’ which can be seen on YouTube and is well worth a look. A top class outfit!
