Hurlers lose to Killavullen

-

Ballyhooly 0-17 Killavullen 1-18

Cavanagh’s of Fermoy Div 1 Hurling League action continued on Tuesday evening as we played Killavullen at home in our third game of the competition. Ballyhooly began well and points from frees by Barry Johnson gave us an early twopoint advantage. Killavullen meanwhile struggled with wides from play and frees but created a goal out of nowhere to give them a start on the scoreboard after eight minutes.

An exchange of points from frees between Barry Johnson and Killavullen kept the sides level with a quarter of an hour played. The free taking continued for the rest of the half with both sides only scoring one point each from play, Ballyhooly’s coming from Brian Lombard.

Half-time score Ballyhooly 0-7 Killavullen 1-8. At this stage Ballyhooly had not put on a great display but were still in the game with only four points separating the sides.

As the game resumed changes in positions and a few new faces, Denis Kiely for Eoin Sykes and James Roche for Dan Cooney, seemed to be making a difference and the second half started well. Again however frees by Barry Johnson became the mainstay with only one point from Eoin Twomey during play making up the total of five points scored in the first quarter of an hour. Killavullen kept pace with Ballyhooly’s additional scores and added four themselves, two from play and two from frees to leave the sides with that goal between them and fifteen minutes left to play. Ballyhooly 0-12 Killavullen 1-12.

Ballyhooly again brought themselves back into the game and over the next ten minutes competed well. A point from a sideline ball by Dylan Collins started the upsurge followed by a free from Barry Johnson and a point from play by James Roche so that with twenty three minutes played in the second half the teams were level again. Ballyhooly 0-16 Killavullen 1-13.

An exchange of points kept the battle going, Gearoid Roche scoring for Ballyhooly, but in the final minutes Killavullen pulled away with three points from play plus a free to give them the final four point advantage.

It was a busy night for the free takers with nine of Ballyhooly’s and ten of Killavullen’s scores coming from placed balls.
