The Avondhu

Busy week with games

-

We played Glanworth last Tuesday evening at home. In arctic-like conditions on a pitch barely playable after torrential rain, our footballers had a great win over a strong Glanworth side. Playing into the teeth of a howling gale, we found scores hard to come by, but our defence stood manfully in the break.

Glanworth took some good scores and at one point we were down 6 points. But a fortunate goal from a Noah Butler shot gave us renewed hope for the second half.

It took us a bit to get going again but 2 points from Darragh and Cory ignited our comeback, but Glanworth were not going away and added another 4 points to their tally. From there we upped the ante and played some great football. Three points on the trot from Noah, Darragh and Barry had us motoring.

A free was pointed by Cory to bring it to a one-point game. We threw everything at the opposition for a winning score and it came when a free from Noah was batted down where it fell to Eoin McHugh who dispatched it into the net for a 2-point led which we persevered until the end. All in all, management were very satisfied with our display.

Team and scorers: Stevie Donegan, Paudie Fitzgerald, Barry Sheedy (0-1), Conor McDonnell, Billy O’Grady, Eoin McHugh (1-0), Richard Hallinan, Darragh Palmer (0-2), Shane Looney, Jamie Sheedy, Jake Buckley, Cory Buckley (0-2), Jordan O’Grady, Noah Butler (1-1), Shaun Cronin. Subs used: Brian O’Regan, Paul Burke and Winston Barry. Full time score: 2-6 to 0-10.

DIVISION 1 LEAGUE

Next up – our hurlers were out on Sunday when we took on Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels in the Division 1 Hurling League.

The weather was the polar opposite to what our footballers faced on Tuesday night, with the sun shining and a balminess to the air.

Gaels got on the scoreboard within the first minute of the game and set the bar for the pace of the game to follow. Shane Looney got our tally underway in the 3rd minute of the game, with Darragh very quickly following suit. The opposition kept us on our toes throughout the first half with point for point being scored.

There was a slight lull midway through the first half but our opponents found the posts again which Cory quickly answered. Darragh Palmer was on fire with 4 points one after another. Half-time saw level sides with 0-12 a piece and the teams on level pegging.

The second half saw Gaels turning on the pressure, however, frees kept them ticking over. Not ideal to give away easy scores when the opposition have a top-class man on the free taking. We added a further 6 points to the scoreboard in the second half, with our own top man on the free taking, Jamie, adding 4 from frees and another from play.

Final whistle saw the scoreboard showing 0-18 to 0-23 in favour of the visitors. Overall, a good game of hurling. Gaps were evident but plenty to work on before our next day out. A notable performance from Darragh at midfield.

Team and scorers: Stevie Donegan, Paudie Fitzgerald, Eoin McHugh, Billy O’Grady, Eoin O’Regan (0-1), Barry Sheedy, Brian O’Reilly (0-1), Cory Buckley (0-1), Darragh Palmer (0-5), Shane Looney (0-1), Noah Butler, Jamie Sheedy (0-7), Jordan O’Grady, Haulie Burke (0-2), Richard Hallinan. Subs used: Conor McDonnell, Shaun Cronin.
