The Avondhu

Welcome to the next generation

-

The past week saw our next generation of hurlers and footballers get out on the pitch for the first time as our Fé6s commenced training. This group is made up of boys born in 2017 (or 2018 if they have started national school) and they will train on Monday and Thursday evenings each week.

We had a good group for our first session with loads of smiling faces on show. If any other boys are interested in starting training, please make contact with lead coach Joe Cahill or any of the club coaches and they will point you in the right direction, or alternatively email the juvenile secretary at secretarybng.kilworth.cork@gaa.ie with any queries.

We are also always on the lookout for additional help in the form of coaches, supervisors, helpers etc. You don’t need to have any experience to get involved in these roles as the club will ensure coaching and child safeguarding courses are made available. Garda Vetting is also completed through the GAA’s online membership platform Foireann.

All groups are now back training so if any older boys would like to try GAA for the first time, again, please do not hesitate to contact any of the coaches or the club secretary at the email address above. All new members are more than welcome.

A WIN AND A LOSS FOR THE FÉ14 P2 HURLERS

With perfect conditions and a fine pitch laid out, it made for an ideal setting in the second game of the Fé14 P2 hurling league, played at Newtownshandrum last Friday evening. Both sides were down some of their more prominent players, but it was Kilworth Araglen Óg who charged from the outset. Our midfield dominated the early tussles ensuring little ball passed through the middle third, and also provided fast ball into our forwards who duly converted. As a result, we were up 13 points within the first quarter.

While we continued to pull away, Shandrum did take advantage of the few balls they got to keep their own scoreboard ticking over. With the gap widening in the second half however, positional changes were made, and subs brought on. Our main aim at this stage was to increase the number of scorers on our side and to minimise their opportunities.

Our boys carried out the gameplan to a tee and managed to hold the opposition scoreless for the second half. Eventually, Kilworth Araglen Óg ran out convincing winners with eight different players getting on the scoreboard which is one of the more promising aspects of the performance. While it was a very positive display, the loss to Eire Óg last Monday and with fixtures against Carrigaline, early pace setters Ballinora, Douglas and Glen Rovers yet to play, we need to be ready for some tough games ahead.

Team: Darragh Collins, Sean Kelleher, Jack Cotter, Ciaran Crowley, Ruairi McCallum, Evan Gowen, Paudie Hurley, Sean Riordan, Oran Hegarty, Luke Browne, Danny Kenneally, Killian Ball, Kuba Ciosmak, Conor Lynch, Bailey Browne. Subs (all played): Justin Gowen, Paddy O’Brien, Darragh Cooney, James Kenneally.

FÉ14S V EIRE ÓG Eire Óg 2-12 Kilworth Araglen Óg 2-11

In our third game of the U14 P2 hurling league, we were hoping to maintain a 100% record against Eire Óg in Ovens last Monday evening. While we had a strong win against this same team last year, the opening 10-15 minutes quickly demonstrated that this was a completely different game. We struggled to grasp the game in these early stages as Eire Óg went into a 5 points to 2 lead.

After some positional changes, we finally started to make progress in the tie, with some fleeting movement in the forward lines, creating wide spaces where our forwards could attack, including a goal in the final few moments of the half, allowing us to build up a 6 point lead by half time.

Despite finishing the first half in the ascendency, it was Eire Óg who came out guns blazing in the second half and their efforts were rewarded as they started to pull our lead back. Some slack marking provided their forwards with more opportunities and they duly complied with several points from play and frees before they got a goal in the final 10 minutes to go ahead.

While our lads picked up in this remaining period, it was our opponents who were resolute and withstood several advances from our forwards to win and clear ball to safety. We managed to get a goal in the dying moments, but as the referee blew for the final whistle, it was Kilworth Araglen Óg who were on the wrong end of a 1-point loss. Our lads were extremely disappointed and know that this was a game that could and probably should have been won. However, they will learn from this and will have a chance to bounce back in games against Bride Rovers (football) and Carrigaline (hurling) in the next week.

Team: Darragh Collins, Sean Kelleher, Jack Cotter, Ciaran Crowley, Ruairi MacCallum, Evan Gowen, Ben Feehan, Sean Riordan, Paudie Hurley, Luke Browne, Danny Kenneally, Killian Ball, Oran Hegarty, Conor Lynch, Bailey Browne. Subs: Kuba Ciosmak, Darragh Cooney, James Kenneally, Justin Gowen.

FÉ18 FOOTBALLERS GO UNDER TO MAYFIELD Mayfield 2-09 Kilworth Araglen Óg 0-04

The Fé18 footballers’ chances of making the league final took a hit in Mayfield last Friday night as the home side took the spoils. The final scoreline of 2-09 to 0-04 was a bit unfair to our lads who were only a point in arrears at half-time. A solitary score remained the difference on the 40 minute mark before the city side hit us for a sucker punch of a goal.

We were without a number of regulars for the game and despite some solid displays, the pressure eventually told in the final quarter as Mayfield pulled away for a deserved victory. We are now dependent on other results going our way if we are to make the final but a final tally of two wins, two losses and a walkover received from Cobh is a big step forward from last year when we struggled to field in a number of games at minor level.

Whilst there is no championship for Fé18s this year, the Fé17 championship will kick off in or around July and with a bit more belief in themselves, this group can have a big say in the outcome of that competition.

Team: Darragh Kellaway, Seán Murphy, Seán Moriarty, Jason Hynes, David Noonan, Eoghan Leddy, Adam Duggan, Oisín Farrell Carey, Seán Óg Kenneally, Gearoid Carey, Pierce Riordan, Conor Twomey, Aaron Browne, Pa Kenny, Cian O’Regan. Subs (all used): Sam Beecher, Kevin Maher and Brian Dunne.

FÉ18 HURLERS FORCED TO CONCEDE WALKOVER TO BALLYHEA

In a disappointing turn of events, our Fé18 hurlers have had to concede their last league fixture to Ballyhea. The game was due to be played tomorrow night and a win would have secured a league final place but unfortunately with over half the side missing due a school tour and our inability to agree an alternative date with Ballyhea, we have been forced to concede the tie.

The concession of this game leaves us on 4 points, and we will need Millstreet, who are bottom of the group, to beat Ballyhea in their last fixture next Wednesday night if we are to have any chance of making the final.

FÉ16 HURLERS MAINTAIN 100% START TO LEAGUE Killavullen 2-11 Kilworth Araglen Óg 3-18

The Fé16 hurlers recorded their second win in this year’s Div 2 league when they had 10 points to spare over a game Killavullen in Killavullen last Sunday morning. Despite being without a number of players, those available put in an excellent shift to build up a 6 point lead, 1-07 to 0-04 by the interval. Kilworth Araglen Óg maintained the intensity levels in the second period, knocking over some topclass scores in addition to 2 more majors to eventually run out 3-18 to 2-11 victors.

Team: Sean O‘Flynn (Ballyclough), Sam Beecher, Kevin Maher, Sean Murphy, Kieran Hynes, Adam Duggan, Gavin O’Donovan, Alex Flynn, Ronan Fenton, Cathal Burdett, Killian Watts, Kevin Reidy, Conor Reilly, Charlie White, Sam O’Brien. Subs Sean O‘Flynn (Orchard), Daniel Fitzgerald, Dave Kenneally.

It’s back to football next weekend for this group as they welcome Ballycastle Gaels to Araglin on Sunday morning for an 11am throw in.

FÉ12 FOOTBALL Kilworth Araglen Óg 6-06 Fermoy 3-06

The Kilworth Araglin Óg Fé12 footballers made it 2 wins from 2 when they had a deserved victory over Fermoy in their group 3 section 2 league fixture played in Kilworth on Tuesday evening last. There had never been anything between these sides when they met at Go Games level over the last number of years and Tuesday evening was once again a very close encounter.

Kilworth Araglen Óg did the majority of their scoring in the first half and by the interval we had built up a 4-03 to 0-04 lead. Fermoy, as expected, rallied on the changeover and to close the gap but as the old saying goes ‘goals win games’ and the 6 that our lads scored put the game beyond Fermoy’s reach on this occasion.

Team: Caleb Clancy, Dylan Mee, Jack Condon, Ronan O’Driscoll, Daragh Lynch, Bobby Kiernan, Darragh Crowley, Michael Quirke, Jason Dunleavy, Charlie O’Brien, Paul Óg Philpott, Culann Russell, Tadgh Ahern. Subs Cian Condon, Cian Dillon, Rian Turzi.

Next up for the U12s is a trip to Watergrasshill for a hurling tie on Monday evening next.

GO GAMES FEAST OF FOOTBALL

Our Fé9 boys were first into action on Saturday morning as they had a 10am start for their games with Mitchelstown. We had 21 players in action, making up 3 teams, who each played 3 games each. Some great football was played by both sides, with brave goalkeeping, tigerish defending and some topclass scores taken.

Mitchelstown are always a great barometer of where a team is at in their development and whilst they were missing a few players, all games were very even. Well done to all boys who played on Saturday morning.

Panel: Charlie O’Donoghue, Odhran O’Donoghue, Shayne Cremin, Cillian McLoughlin, Hugh Hickey, Bobby Hegarty, Tom Kenny, Dylan Kenny, James Hegarty, Liam Bonner, Jamie Evans, Noah Dunne, Ollie Higgins, Shane Sweetnam, Tom Aherne, Liam Fleming, Ben Buckley, Ethan O’Donoghue, Luke McCrea, Thomas O’Sullivan, Luke Kenneally.

Next up for the Fé9s is a trip to Ballyduff on Sunday morning for a hurling tournament against Ballyduff, St Oliver’s and Cois Bhríde before they head to Ballynoe on Tuesday evening next where they will play St Catherine’s and Castlelyons.

FÉ10S

Next up were our Fé10 boys who hosted Aghada at 11:15 in pitch 1. The boys from East Cork were technically very strong and played a nice brand of football but our boys have been working hard at their game recently and had some excellent passages of play themselves. Well done boys and keep up the hard work in training.

Panel: Donagh Murray, Colm Fitzgerald, Michael Ryan, Max Browne, Max McGrath, Jack Prendiville, Ryan O’Dwyer, Harry Aherne, Jack Brokenshire, Aidan Tobin, Ruari Kenneally, Tomás Dennigan, Cormac Lysaght, Joey Kiernan, Jack Flynn, Leo Simmons, Marko Stefanac and Dillon O’Regan.

The U10s are due to travel to Kildorrery next weekend for games against the home side and Buttevant.

FÉ11S

In what was our final Go Games fixture of the day, our Fé11 boys played Killavullen in pitch 2 at 11.15. Again the coaches were very happy with the performances of their charges on the morning with some excellent football played. The season is in full swing at this stage and the Fé11 boys are due to play Fermoy in their next hurling fixture next weekend. Please liaise with management for details of same.

BUSY FEW WEEKS FOR VOLUNTEERS IN THE PITCH GROUNDS

Sincere thanks to all those who have put in so much time and effort to the new viewing area to the stand side of the grounds in recent weeks. What started out as a fence to the second pitch has resulted in a complete overhaul of that side of the grounds with fencing, a concrete path and stoned viewing area installed to the entire length of the pitch. Whilst up to 30 people have been involved in the project, a special mention must go to Pa Browne and Brian Carey who have put in huge time and effort over the last month or so.

The past week has also seen a significant amount of work completed on the pitches themselves with both fields aerated, overseeded and fertilised, with approximately 120 tonnes of sand also spread on pitch 2. Thanks to the club members who spent last Saturday afternoon mowing and collecting grass from the pitches in preparation for these works.
