Kilworth 2-16 Bandon 1-15

Our Intermediate hurlers recorded their first win at the fourth attempt with four points to spare over Bandon in this Red FM Division 3 Hurling League game played in Kilworth last Sunday morning. The opening half was a tight affair with the sides level on six occasions with the half-time score reading 1-5 to 0-8. The sides were all square 0-1 to 0-1 after 3 minutes, 0-2 to 0-2 after 8 minutes and 0-3 to 0-3 in the 10th minute, our three points coming from Noel McNamara placed balls.

Brian Sheehan raised our first green flag in the 13th minute. A great move up field from defence in the build-up, saw Mike Sheehan shoot for goal initially. The keeper saved well but the Bandon defence failed to clear their lines due in no small part to the work rate of our inside forwards with Brian on hand with a fine ground stroke on the turn, finding the back of the net and we led by 3 points 1-3 to 0-3.

Bandon responded well with three points (1 free) to level matters once more. At 1-3 to 0-4 Brian Sheehan rattled the cross bar from distance and was very unlucky the ball didn’t nestle under or go over at least. Noel McNamara with a great individual point on the run and a Bandon (free) made it 1-4 to 0-7. A pointed free from either side in first half injury time and the score stood at 1-5 to 0-8 at the short whistle.

Kilworth were out of the blocks quickly on the turnover, Jamie Sheehan picking up the ball in space before landing his first over of the half. Brian Sheehan was almost in for his second goal a minute later, minus his hurley and getting a boot to the ball as it went whistling past the post.

Noel McNamara with two further pointed frees, Brian Sheehan fouled on both occasions, extended the lead to three points 1-8 to 0-8, before Brian pointed himself, catching, turning and striking to stretch the advantage to four. Bandon replied with two white flags (1 free) followed by yet another Noel McNamara free after Leo Coffey was upended and we led 1-10 to 0-10 forty minutes in. Two more points for either side made it 1-12 to 0-12 at the three-quarter mark.

Noel McNamara from a free when Brian Sheehan was held up heading for goal and Jamie Sheehan with Kilworth’s scores. Bandon from play and Noel converting his own free and the green flag separated the sides once more. A foul on Mike Gowen was punished by Noel before two Bandon frees reduced their arrears to two points with 57 minutes on the clock. Mike Sheehan with a poacher’s goal, gathering the ball from a break close to the danger zone, extended our lead to five points 2-14 to 0-15 and the two league points on offer looked secure.

However, into added time Bandon netted a free from distance with the ball getting through a crowded defence and the lead was reduced to a dangerous two points yet again. Kilworth didn’t panic and finished in the ascendancy, Liam Whelan and Luke Carey pointing from distance to leave the final score 2-16 to 1-15.

This was a good result and performance and hopefully a springboard for the remainder of the league and the championship later in the summer. The next round of the league is scheduled for Sunday, April 30th away to Inniscarra in Ballyanley.
