Ballygiblin mourn the loss of club president

-

It’s hard to sum up a man’s life. When a man has had such an impact on a club, the task is nigh on impossible, and this is only a mere snippet of his GAA life and doesn’t do the trojan work he did throughout his lifetime justice. Jimmy Moher is our current club president, a title which was richly deserved after a life dedicated to the GAA and Ballygiblin. He was one of the founding members of the Ballygiblin Hurling Club in 1955, himself and his brothers John Joe and Paddy moving to play with Ballygiblin after initially playing a number of games with The Fingerpost.

Along with playing he also took up various roles within the club. He was treasurer from 1955-58 and again in 1997-1998. He was chairman from 1964 to 1970 and again in 1972 to 1976. Secretary from 2000-2005.

He was also part of the 1963 first ever North Cork winning team. He was also a fantastic footballer, winning many honours with Mitchelstown as well as serving as chairman and vice-chairman.

As a fundraiser he had no equal, coordinating the County Board Draw as well as various other fundraisers, he served as a North Cork Delegate, County Minor Executive member and was instrumental in purchasing the current pitch in 1979.

He was also a founding member of the Juvenile Club in 1980, spending 15 years as secretary in a very successful time for the juveniles. He was ahead of his time introducing the first ever coaching in Ballygiblin National School. He was a very dedicated and committed coach and team mentor at all underage levels and encouraged and developed many players under his watch and tenure, he gave many their first start and watched them progress and grow to become established players in the Junior team. Some of those players took to the field last January in the All-Ireland final.

He was an ardent supporter of Ballygiblin throughout his life and no doubt a very proud man to have 4 sons play for the club and bring various honours back to Ballygiblin. He also got to see his beloved Ballygiblin, and his son David bring the ultimate prize of an All-Ireland title back to the Crossroads earlier this year.

The club has lost another great clubman and a lovely gentleman, he will be sadly missed, not only by his family and friends but also by his GAA family and all who knew him. The GAA community showed their respects with a fitting guard of honour at his funeral Mass in Ballygiblin on Monday, also all fixtures at the weekend were postponed as a mark of respect and the tricolour flew at half-mast at the Ballygiblin pitch. We offer our sincere condolences to his wife Peggy and our Intermediate team manager Dave, along with all his family and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
