Comprehensive win for Gaels U15 footballers against St Patrick’s

-

Galtee Gaels 6-07 St Patrick’s 3-03

Last Tuesday night saw round 2 of the Mr Binman U15 Football Championship away to St Patricks.

In ideal conditions for football, Galtee Gaels went on the attack right from the start and within a minute Edward Moriarty had the ball in the back of the net only for it to be disallowed for a square ball. This did not phase Edward and 2 minutes later, on the next attack, he drove the ball to the back of the net for the first store of the game.

With Olan and Robbie Ryan dominating midfield and Scott Reidy causing havoc from centre forward, Scott and Robbie kicked 2 points in quick succession on the 8th and 9th minute.

On 13 minutes St Patrick’s got their first score when a loose ball in the square was volleyed to the back of the net by the full forward. From the kickout Gaels won position and a darting run from Haulie Gallaghue following by some fine interplay between Scott and Robbie secured Gaels’ 3rd point of the night.

With the Gaels backline in control, ably marshalled by Liam O’Donnell and William Fitzgerald, Gaels worked the ball up the field and an excellent pass from Paul Quane to pick out the on running William Fitzgerald, who offloaded to Robbie Ryan to kick Gaels’ second goal of the night.

With the home side now starting to settle and play some good football our backline came under increasing pressure but tight marking and good support play from Kevin O’Mahony, Cathal Maher and Padraic Casey stayed off any attacking treats.

On 22 minutes Galtee Gaels got in for their 3rd goal of the night following great work by Jack Clifford and Haulie Gallaghue. St Patrick’s pegged back 2 points on the 24th and 25th minute but on the stroke of half-time Robbie Ryan kicked a fine point to leave the scoreline at the break reading 3-04 to 1-02 in favour of the visitors.

The home side came out all guns blazing at the start of the 2nd half going on the attack right from the throw in, and only for a fine intercept from Liam O’Donnell they would have been in for a certain goal. A minute later however St Patrick’s did get in for a goal following a powerful shot to the left corner, giving Jack Prendergast no chance in goal.

Gaels response was excellent and on 31 minutes, following a long range kick pass from William Fitzgerald, Olan Ryan cut open the St Patrick’s defence and picked out the supporting Scott Reidy who duly blasted the ball to the net. Gaels were now firmly back in control and a minute later Haulie Gallaghue was denied a goal when a rasping shot hit the crossbar, however the resulting rebound was gathered by Paul Quane and neatly slotted over the bar.

On the 35th minute Robbie kicked another point before St Patrick’s scored their 3rd goal of the night, despite the best efforts of Jack Prendergast in goal, who brought off a fantastic save to the initial shot only for the rebound to be volleyed to the net.

Gaels never took their foot off the pedal and a strong final 5 minutes saw Olan Ryan kick an excellent long range point before Jack Clifford, in flying form, set up Scott Reidy for his night’s 2nd goal and a minute later found the back of the net himself following a wonderful lofted kick to the right of the goalie.

Overall this was a fantastic display and a well-deserved win for Galtee Gaels The final score from Páirc Naomh Padraig read Galtee Gaels 6-07 St Patricks 3-03.

THE LEGEND ANDREW

Very well done to Andrew Breedy (a coach with Galtee Gaels) who represented Limerick on home turf last Saturday against Cork in the Masters Football. Andrew played great stuff on the day and it was a great honour to see him beat Cork in Kilbehenny. We are proud of you.
