All of which means the lotto draw on Monday night, April 24th in the clubrooms, Ballynoe now has a jackpot of €13,000.

ROUND 2 RED FM SPONSORED DIVISION 4 COUNTY HURLING LEAGUE (REARRANGED) Youghal 2-10 St Catherine’s 1-12

Worrying were the conditions around 4pm on the evening of the game. Thankfully and gradually the rain eased off with the sun now doing its best to break through. Resultingly this rearranged tie, twice the victim of poor weather previously, was able to proceed and was played up on Magners Hill on Tuesday evening, April 11th.

Harry Draper, Shane Cotter and Ben O’Brien among those contributing with the goal finished off by Daniel Mangan on 23 minutes. Enough to establish an interval advantage for a St Catherine’s team having played with the benefit of a deceptively strong wind and ahead on a half-time scoreline standing at 1-08 to 0-02.

A brace of Kevin Barry points on the turnover thus becoming the 8th Saints’ player to register on the scoreboard, added to the tally against visibly improving Youghal now with confidence further boosted by a Devon O’Donoghue goal. Making it 1-12 to 1-06 on 42 minutes. Influential replacement Bill Cooper was making his mark. Defender Conor Spillane also on the mark and after a previous effort was ruled out it was Oisin Hill who forced home the second and match winning Youghal goal right at the death.

ROUND 4 RED FM SPONSORED DIVISION 4 COUNTY HURLING LEAGUE Valley Rovers 0-20 St Catherine’s 1-14

A duo of Gearoid O’Brien points preceded a move initiated by Sean O’Donoghue before Eoin Condon picked his spot for the Saints’ and the game’s only goal on 11 minutes of this tie played at a mild, albeit overcast Brinny (Halfway/Crossbarry area) on Sunday morning last at 11.30am. A score maintaining the visitors challenge right through though scores from John Cottrell, Darragh O’Shea and a brace of Darragh Murphy points saw a narrow Valley Rovers lead established and ahead on a half-time scoreline standing at 0-11 to 1-07.

That bit of shifting around allied to the accuracy of Kyle Wallace from placed balls and Eoin Davis from further back the field saw a lead exchanging hands as an evenly fought contest advanced. Two evenly matched teams together for a sixth time on a 1-13 to 0-16 scoreline on 58 minutes.

With four of the last five scores, victory going to the home team. Score at the end being Valley Rovers 0-20 St Catherines 1-14. For the third time inside eleven months Aghabullogue are next to Ballynoe. Game five of a nine match regular league group programme.

ROUND 4 DIVISION 2 EAST CORK JUNIOR HURLING LEAGUE Cloyne 3-17 St Catherines 1-19

A junior hurling league tie belying its division two status when played in Cloyne on Thursday evening last at 7pm. Two evenly matched teams together for a fifth time to 25 minutes. Ronan Clancy, Kian O’Donoghue, Cathal Dinneen and Harry Draper amongst the Saints’ scorers. As was Ian Farmer for the hosts. Ian Cahill with the goal. Enough to establish a Cloyne lead on a half-time scoreline standing at 1-10 to 0-12.

A mesmeric double Craig O’Driscoll save twice denying Darragh Morrison, albeit for a point, maintained the one point margin early on the turnover as the contest swung decidedly in the home team’s favour. Conor Cahill goaling from a placed ball initiating a scoring return of 2-04 and a lead of 3-15 to 0-15 to the end of the third quarter. In fairness to the Saints there was no giving up. No throwing in the towel.

Substitute Richie O’Connell with the goal on 55 minutes. Margin down to 3 points. A late Conor Cahill pointed free confirming a four point Cloyne victory on an end scoreline of 3-17 to 1-19. Good stuff.

ROUND 3 DIVISION 1 REBEL ÓG EAST U14 HURLING LEAGUE Kiltha Óg 1-10 St Catherine’s 0-10

Originally billed for Castlemartyr an U14 HL tie relocated and played at a cold Ballynoe on Friday evening last at 7pm. Labelled a round 3 fixture although the previous two were rained off. Favoured by a stiffish breeze at their backs and with Jack Carlton an ominous threat up front it was 0-06 to 0-02 for the visitors at the half whistle.

Tightening up considerably on the change of ends. Sean O’Keeffe knows what to do and seems a natural between the posts. Eoin O’Mahony getting to grips with the situation in the unaccustomed role of fullback and things gradually picked up for the home-based team. Alan Cotter, Kenneth O’Connell, Tadgh

Walsh, Tomas Morrison further out the field now finding the range. A league tie ultimately decided by a Colm Smiddy placed ball eluding all and sundry for a slightly fortuitous and what proved match-winning goal on 54 minutes. Many thanks to Brian Sheehan for stepping in at ridiculously short notice due to the absence of the appointed referee.

Scorers: A Cotter (0-04 frees) (0-05), K O’Connell (0-02), B O’Connor, T Walsh and T Morrison (0-01 each).

St Catherine’s team: S O’Keeffe, S McCarthy, E O’Mahony, S Moore, C Higgins, S Walsh, K O’Connell, A Cotter, B O’Connor, E Dillon, R Hickey, T Walsh, A Burke, T Morrison, J Cunneen. Subs: R O’Donoghue and C McCarthy for A Burke and S Moore (both 42), N Curtin for J Cunneen (53), D Temple for E Dillon (55).

Referee: Brian Sheehan (home club).

ROUND 1 DIVISION 1 REBEL ÓG EAST U14 HURLING LEAGUE (REARRANGED) Watergrasshill 3-10 St Catherine’s 0-10

St Catherine’s were able to haul in an early deficit and through the accuracy of Alan Cotter and Tadgh Walsh briefly turned it around to lead 0-07 to 1-03 in this rearranged tie when played in Watergrasshill at 4pm on Sunday evening last. But late goals from a Tadg McCarthy penalty and Matthew Counihan sealed the deal for the home team.

ROUND 1 REBEL ÓG NORTH U12 HURLING LEAGUE Kilworth/Araglen Óg 6-11 St Catherine’s 2-08

First game in the competition following this U12 tie when played in Araglen on Bank Holiday Monday, April 10th at 6.30pm. There’s no doubt the home team had the

better players and Darragh Lynch and JJ Cahill frequently troubled the visitors’ defence when establishing a lead on a half-time scoreline standing at 5-05 to 1-06.

St Catherine’s had the start required with David Temple crashing in the second goal within 90 seconds of the resumption. But the home-based team always held the upper hand. St Caths will improve. Things will only get better. As a team trying hard with Padraig O’Sullivan, Noah Keane, Sean Moore, Sean O’Keeffe, Kenneth O’Connell and David Temple well worthy of mention. Zak Pyne was team captain for the game.

Scorers: K O’Connell (0-03 frees) (1-04), D Temple (1-01) and S O’Keeffe (frees) (0-03).

Team: P O’Sullivan, N Keane, G Leahy, C Fitzgerald, S Moore, Z Pyne (c), S O’Keeffe, A O’Gorman, S Maguire, K O’Connell, B Coakley, D Temple, J Bryan. Subs: J Kearney for J Bryan (28), A Coakley for S Maguire (31), O Sheehan for A O’Gorman (32).
