Foireann Fé 14 - history made!

-

On a historic evening for Cumann Camógaíochta Chill Uird, our U14s took to the field in Kilworth on Saturday, 15th April 2023, against Youghal Camogie Club, for the club’s first time playing at Grade A. Refereed by John Lenehan, the girls’ tenacity shone through, fighting for every ball to the final whistle. With every girl getting game time, there were some outstanding blocks and hooks on show. A huge team effort, the work rate and team spirit were plain to be seen.

Laura Moriarty was strong in goals, flanked in front by the experienced Ellen Horgan manning the backline. Róisín Dennigan was solid in defence and made a number of lovely clearances. Some clever reading and ground hurling was utilised by Ailbhe Brett to clear the ball. Ríona Hogan and Ruth Casey were solid in the halfback line with some great runs forward and Jane Linehan showed some excellent leadership skills at centre back.

Our midfield duo of Lucy Beecher and Leah Burke showed fantastic skill and athleticism driving the ball forward, with the half-forward line of Irina Flynn, Meadbh Riordan and Claudine Brett ensuring that the tempo was kept up throughout. With some nice balls won by Shona Kenneally, Emma Gibson and Casey Lane were impressive in the forward line.

A few changes throughout the game made great impacts with Sally McSweeney and Ciara Magnier coming into the forward line and Lilly O’Donoghue and Caoimhe O’Brien in the backs ensuring focus was maintained. Goals from Lucy Beecher and Emma Gibson and points from Lucy, Emma and Casey Lane, with some outstanding saves from Laura Moriarty, brought the final tally to 2-9 v Youghal 0-8.

It was fantastic to see the team spirit and camaraderie from the injured Naoise Browne who was on the sideline encouraging her teammates. Part of the team, but unavailable on the night were Olivia Mee and Leah Seymour.

Credit to the coaches John Browne, Liam Horgan, Christy Beecher and Eleanor Twomey who have worked with this team over the last few years, and to some new faces for 2023 in Sarah Kenny and Caroline O’Brien. Also to the team’s female supervisors Emma Beecher, Emma Dennigan, Linda Kenneally and Lucille Lane, and to Bridget Allen and Aoife Kenny who will shortly be joining the fold.

Team on the evening: Laura Moriarty, Ailbhe Brett, Ellen Horgan, Róisín Dennigan, Ríona Hogan, Jane Linehan, Ruth Casey, Lucy Beecher, Leah Burke, Irina Flynn, Meadbh Riordan, Claudine Brett, Shona Kenneally, Emma Gibson, Casey Lane, Sally McSweeney, Lilly O’Donoghue, Caoimhe O’Brien, Ciara Magnier.

Great skill was on display from both sides. The Kilworth backs battled tirelessly against a strong forward team on display from Fermoy and the Kilworth forward produced some beautiful scores. Well done to all the girls and Fermoy for the challenge.

MINOR LEAGUE APRIL 12TH V CASTLELYONS

Following our championship final win last year and reaching the league final at Grade C, we have been promoted to play at Minor B grade this season, another first for the club. This year sees a big shift in the starting 15 due to a number of girls having moved to Junior due to age. Despite this, the determination and team spirit from last year remains evident.

Captained by Rachel O’Driscoll and Gemma O’Brien, our minor team began their 2023 league campaign on Wednesday, 12th April, with a narrow victory of 2-15 to 4-7 over Castlelyons, in Kilworth. Two very early goals by Castlelyons could have rocked any team but the girls kept their composure and worked the ball through the lines, taking their points. The game was level on numerous occasions across the 60 minutes.

With the wind high, there were some fantastic scores on display by the forwards, with a goal in the first half from Tara Carey and another in the last 10 minutes from Caoimhe O’Flynn, securing a 2 point win. It would be remiss not to also mention the efforts from the backline, who showed an impressive work rate to slowly take control of the Castlelyons forwards and come out on top. Scores on the evening came from the following: Caoimhe 01-08, Shauna O’D 00-02, Ella May 00-01, Tara Carey 01-01, Claire 00-01, Thea 00-01, Shauna L 00-01.
