Ballynoe water mains to ‘finally’ be replaced

- KATIE GLAVIN

A number of road closures are to take place in Ballynoe as water mains rehabilitation works are to get underway.

The news of the water mains replacement was welcomed locally after repeated calls for the upgrade had been made in recent times.

Cllr William O’Leary said that he was ‘delighted’ to see that works will now take place in Ballynoe.

“Residents have been long suffering in this area with continuous outages and breaks, so it is welcome to see that these works with regards to the replacement of 3km of water mains will take place,” he said.

At a meeting of the Northern Divisional Committee in February, Cllr O’Leary had outlined that the village and surrounds had experienced ‘huge issues’ in relation to water outages and breaks, due to aged infrastructure in the area.

Ward & Burke, the contractors, are to start works in the village on Monday, May 8.

According to Cllr O’Leary, plans are to start on the Ballynoe to Conna road first under a shuttle system and then follow onto the formally advertised road closures. Residents and businesses have been notified.

Cllr Frank O’Flynn also welcomed the news, noting that works should be delivered within five to six weeks.

“I am delighted that funding has been secured for this. It’s welcome news and will ensure good quality water supply for the residents, farmers and businesses of Ballynoe,” he said.

The L1528, Ballynoe Village North is expected to close from May 15 until May 26 for works, followed by the L-5829 in Ballynoe village from May 29 until June 9.

On June 12, the L-1529 in the village is expected to close until August 4, followed by the L-5827 at Newtown Ballynoe from July 24 until August 18.
