Vladimir and friends pack out Doneraile venue

- JOHN AHERN

We may not be back to pre- Covid crowds just yet, but we seem to be getting there. On Friday evening last, an invitation was extended to the public to be part of a concert by Slovakian brothers, Vladimir and Anton Jablokov in St. Mary's Church, Doneraile. The good news for organisers is that the historic Church of Ireland venue was packed to capacity for an occasion that was thoroughly enjoyed by patrons.

Commenting following the show, organising committee member, Eilish Lane-Nagle, said that violinists Vladimir and Anton, who were accompanied by Vincent Lynch on piano, had been very well received.

"It was a most entertaining evening from some wonderful musicians, the public turned out in force to support the event and for this, we are very grateful," she said.

This sentiment was echoed by Linda Deane, who addressed attendees at the end of proceedings.

"I hope you've all enjoyed what has been a very special occasion in a very special venue, the musicians were superb," she observed.

BELLS FALL SILENT

Linda went on to tell her audience that funds from the evening were going towards the 'St. Mary's Church Bells Fund'.

"Our 6 bells are an intrinsic part of St. Mary's, but unfortunately in recent times, they've been unsafe to use, and, as a result, we've had to send them to a specialist in England, where they are undergoing essential maintenance," she explained.

While we don't have an exact figure on the 'bill for the bells', it's understood to be in 'the tens of thousands'. Thanks to people like Eilish, Linda and Jackie Nagle, the much needed finance is being collected 'a euro at a time' and the committee concerned are very confident that it won't be too long before the bells of St. Mary's are ringing out around Doneraile once more.

SINCERE 'THANK YOU'

Those responsible for last Friday night's fundraiser, would like to thank everyone who supported the event. The consensus was that the performance by Vladimir, Anton and Vincent was an uplifting experience that only the joy of music can create.
