Glanmire Community College are working with Cork City Council’s Youth Challenge Co-ordinator, Liam Harris to train a team for the Cork City Marathon Youth Challenge.

With just five weeks to go now to this year’s event, a new 10k option alongside the full and half marathons will see more people running than ever before, with anyone 15 years or older eligible to give the new 10k distance a go.

Secondary schools and youth clubs all over Cork City and county are being invited to sign up teams to enter the 2023 Cork City Marathon Youth Challenge, with Glanmire Community College students already in training. Speaking with The Avondhu on Wednesday, Glanmire Community College teacher, Lisa Hegarty said that there are currently 12 teens from the school signed up for this year’s Youth Challenge category.

“We train for running on Fridays after school so the students come then to train. A lot of them play sports outside school, so they’re doing their own training as well with that,” Ms Hegarty said.

Students from fifth and sixth year at the school are currently training for the challenge, along with two third-year students.

“It’s a really good initiative. With running, people often get turned off because they think it’s too competitive, but to be honest it’s great because it’s promoting physical activity and it’s an initiative that’s in Cork and near the school, so it’s a local event that’s a fun thing for the kids to do,” Ms Hegarty added.

PART OF A TEAM

Lord Mayor, Councillor Deirdre Forde has officially launched the 2023 Marathon.

“The Youth Challenge is specially designed for our young people; it’s about getting involved and making the year count for something special”, said Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr. Deirdre Forde.

“Participants can walk, jog or run the Youth Challenge – it’s about taking part, having fun, keeping fit and enjoying the unique excitement and buzz on marathon day.”

Cork City Council has hired a dedicated Youth Challenge co-ordinator, Liam Harris, who will be working with specific schools and youth clubs in the city to prepare them for the 10k. Liam is a qualified athletic coach who has represented Ireland many times in his distinguished athletics career.

“Being part of a team is something special, whether it’s in school, sport or work. Whether running as an individual, or in a team, the Youth Challenge is a fun, engaging, experience that shows character and commitment,” Liam commented. “It will be a unique experience and I encourage all principals and PE teachers to encourage their students to take part”.

The 10k will begin at the same location as the marathon, allowing runners to share the start-line experience on St Patrick’s Street, and it will have dedicated pacers too. For those who enjoy the comradery and teamwork, you’ll have the option of entering as a team or individuals, with all results displayed online afterwards. All participants will receive a medal and will be in with the chance of winning some great spot prizes.
