Road improvements sought for sections of N72
Connabarry, Castletownroche is on the cards to receive road improvement works, however, Kilquane, Mallow may be waiting some time for similar works as there is currently no pavement improvements planned for this area.
Works to these sections on the N72 were queried following a motion tabled by Cllr Noel McCarthy at the recent Northern Divisional Committee meeting.
Cllr McCarthy called for the committee to write to TII to see that funding be made available to carry out projects on the sections of the N72 at Connabarry and Kilquane which require ‘immediate attention’.
According to Cllr McCarthy, he had received representations from haulage companies and those who use the road on a regular basis.
Following the closure of a section of the N73, the councillor noted, the N72 saw ‘a lot of extra traffic’ causing damage to the road surface.
A response, issued by Cork County Council director of roads and transportation, Padraig Barrett, stated that the council recently submitted a Pavement Asset Renewal and Repair proposal to TII for the N72 on the Fermoy side of Castletownroche, which has since received approval.
“Cork County Council is now progressing the preparation of detailed design and tender documentation for a pavement improvement scheme at this location,” the response read.
However, in relation to the N72 at Kilquane, Mr Barrett stated that a pavement improvement scheme is not currently planned.
“Cork County Council will liaise with TII in relation to this section of the N72 and request funding to progress a pavement improvement scheme for same,” he said.
