Busy week for club
A busy week for our club this weeks, some wins and some tough games for our members. Well done to all involved and to the parents for their ongoing commitment. A new and interesting initiative was launched by the GAA this week, which is detailed below and sounds very interesting. This would be a great project for our members to be involved in and invaluable for future generations.
TRAINING
Galtee Gaels Club na nÓg training for all levels will return every Tuesday evening at the GAA pitch. Parents, feel free to come and use the walking track while the children are training, it’s a great facility.
U15 ROUND 3
Last Monday evening saw our U15s face Hospital Herberstown on our own turf in Galtee Gaels. A perfect sunny evening for the match and Gaels started strongly. A great home crowd were there to support the guys and Scott Reidy, captain, got the first point. He followed his tally later with a great goal. Edward Moriarty was in great form, adding 1-1 to the scoreboard with strong support from Robbie Ryan.
Lovely, quick short passing play was on display from Gaels which resulted in a great display of what this team does best – team work. Jack Clifford started this evening and played very well. Robbie Ryan added 3 points to the score in the first half. William Fitzgerald came from centre back on a number of occasions to help out, resulting in a point for him.
After 15 minutes Hospital Herberstown got their first point and a goal followed withing the next 5 minutes. Gaels were ahead but the pressure was on. A penalty in the 23rd minute was awarded to our boys, Robbie Ryan went forward to take it but it was saved by the opposition. Gearoid Russell had a very strong match and added 1 goal 1 point to the board. Our birthday boy was Kevin O’Mahony and he defended excellently and won a lot of ball. William Fitzgerald and Liam Burke helped save a goal at the whistle of first half leaving Gaels on top going into the second half.
Things heated up in the second half and Gaels had to dig deep, which they did. Michael Noonan scored a lovely point and Liam O’Donnell was busy clearing the ball at the other end. Cathal Maher had some great catches and passes with Padraig Casey clearing the ball on several occasions.
William Fitzgerald scored 1 point from a free with 4 minutes to go and lucky for us Robbie put 2 more great points over the bar to secure a home win. Final score 3-13
Galtee Gaels to 3-7 Hospital/Herberstown. Another victory for these lads who are growing in strength and confidence with each match they play.
Next date for the diary is the 26th June against Ahane. Gives our lads plenty of time for rest and study for the inhouse exams!

U11S
Galtee Gaels U11s played our first game of the year in Bruree against Bruree. We had a massive turnout of 23 players, all decked out in their new jerseys kindly sponsored by Ballybrien Installations. Due to the massive turnout, we split the team in half and each group played 20 mins each ensuring everyone got equal playing time.
The boys gave it everything from start to finish. We were up against a very strong opponent but the boys never dropped their heads and kept encouraging each right to the end. Massive thanks to the parents for the turnout for an away game and thanks to Bruree for hosting the game.
We are due to play our next game on 9th May. Details to be confirmed.
80S AND 90S NIGHT AT KILBEHENNY
Our Senior club are running an 80s and 90s themed disco night in Kilbehenny community centre on May, 13th doors open at 7.30pm. DJ, bar, BBQ and fancy dress are on the agenda. Tickets are available from Mick Kearney at a cost of €10. Great night assured.
GAA GENERATIONS
GAA Generations is a great new initiative as part of the healthy clubs programme designed to encourage the passing down of stories from generation to generation within the GAA community. There is many a good story teller in the parish and it would be fantastic if we could capture some of these stories about the Galtee Gaels legends of the past. Details of the project are as follows -
The GAA Generations is a major new oral history project that will be built on conversations between young and old sections of our membership. We are our stories, and we tell them while standing on the shoulders of those who came before us. Ireland boasts a rich tradition of passing our stories from one generation to the next. To honour that, and to capture a better understanding of what the GAA means to its members, the Association has launched a ‘ GAA Generations’ oral research project.
The idea is simple – we are inviting young GAA, LGFA and Camogie Association members aged 12-21 to record on their mobile phone a conversation with ‘ One Good Adult’ in the 55+ age bracket that they look up to and admire. It could be, for example, a parent/ grandparent, a coach, or a teacher, past or present, that saw and nurtured your potential. The older participants will also be given the opportunity to quiz their young interviewees on their GAA experiences and how it may have impacted their understanding of who they are.
The project aims to recruit between 500-1,000 young members (aged 12-21 years-old) who will receive online training in conducting a semi-structured interview with a person of influence in their life aged 55+. It aims to include the Irish diaspora’s perspective particularly through the club networks of north America and the UK. The conversations with their selected ‘ One Good Adult’ (aged 55+), recorded on a smart phone along with a photo of the participants, will be stored for prosperity and future research purposes on the GAA’s eLearning platform.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED?
GAA members aged 12-21 years (inclusive) who would like to participate in this research project, are requested to provide an expression of interest which can be found at: www.gaa.ie/generations. Depending on the volume of applications received, it may not be possible to facilitate everyone due to the analysis of the data required. Parental consent is required for those U18 to participate in the project and to complete the expression of interest form.
We would encourage the younger members of Galtee Gaels to have a go at taking on this project. Any questions or suggestions please feel free to contact Mairead Fitzgerald or Mick Kearney 0863803299.
