Galtee Gaels Junior Bs welcomed Camogue Rovers to Kilbehenny last Tuesday, 25th April for the South Junior A League third round clash. Both sides went into the game level on points with two wins each and two walkovers awarded.

The men from Meanus pointed first with their inside forward line the stand out danger men. However, it was a Gaels defender, half back Liam Maunsell who kicked a fine score to level proceedings. From the opening ten minutes of this match it was clear this was going to be an even contest. It was point for point for the first quarter with Jack Ryan, the hard working Eamon Kelly and Dereck Gallahue all pointing to leave it 4 points to 3,

Camogue kicking two from play and one from a free. Camogue were mostly playing with a two man full forward line however Gaels back six were working well as a unit with Eamon Moloney, Edward Quinn and Ian Whelan ensuring a lot ball was turned over into attacks including one from Tommy O’Dwyer on the 20th minute who bust forward from corner back to kick a good score to keep Gaels ahead. Gaels began to grow slightly more into the game and this was reflected when Paddy English goaled on the 24th minute to claim his second goal in two games from midfield.

This was followed up with a point from Sean Casey from a free to give Gaels a 1-6 to 5 point lead at half time. Despite taking a four point lead into half time some loose passing and questionable shot selection meant an improvement was badly needed if Gaels were to see out this game. Gaels were dealt a blow almost immediately after the second half resumed when Camogue goaled after their corner forward was allowed to turn too easily and fire a shot past keeper Cian Lewis.

Gaels were lacking a response and Camogue capitalised with

another point and crucially raised another green flag after their half forward was left unmarked and let palm the ball into the net after it was squared across goal. The introduction of Brendan Childs and Andy Breedy bolstered the Gaels attack with both getting on the ball and putting Gaels right back in the game for the final quarter. Gaels were rewarded with winning three frees which were converted from the boot of Sean Casey.

Andy Breedy added a point from play to give Gaels a one point. Camogue Rovers were than reduced to 14 men however Gaels could not take more advantage and would rue missed chances late on that would have edged them ahead further. One point is a dangerous lead and Camogue were awarded a free on the edge of the square which they put over to level for the last score of the game.

When referee Mike Meade drew a conclusion to the game both teams had to be happy with a draw on a score line of Galtee Gaels 1-10 Camogue Rovers 2-7. This leaves Gaels going into the final two league games level on top of the table with Camogue Rovers on nine points each.

This year already the club has re sodded both goalmouths and constructed a new mesh along the embankment on the shrove side. In the coming weeks we hope to sand our training area. This would not be possible without the support of a Sports Capital grant which was awarded to the club last year.
