The Avondhu

Walkway to start soon

-

Works are due to commence in the coming weeks on our community footpath and lighting project. This is thanks in a large part to an almost 70% grant from North Cork Leader LAG and substantial additional support from the TOMAR trust.

We would like to thank Dave Foley from Avondhu Blackwater and Seanie Barry from TOMAR for their help in securing this vital funding. When completed, the walkway which will be fully lit will be 1km long and be a great resource for the entire community.

INTERMEDIATES TOO GOOD

We travelled to Ballyanly last Saturday afternoon to take on Blarney in the division 3 hurling league. Damp and greasy conditions prevailed but that didn’t stop the lads putting in a decent performance and coming away with the win. Castlelyons started brighter with Alan Fenton pointing a free after the lively Oscar Hallihan was fouled. James Kearney intercepted the resulting puck out and punished the mistake by shooting the ball over the bar.

Blarney responded by scoring a well taken goal after their corner forward squared the ball across the face of the goal to find his teammate who fired the sliothar into the back of the net. We recovered well from the setback and scored 4 points on the trot. Alan pointed two frees and the sharp David Morrison scored two fine points after brilliant deliveries by Keith O’Leary.

Castlelyons did well defending the Blarney puckouts with Dara Spillane, Leo Sexton and Shane Moroney all hurling well in the halfback line. The industrious Peter Roche was fouled after 25 mins when his darting run was illegally stopped by the Blarney defender. Alan duly pointed. Alan scored a brilliant long-range point from play after Blarney were dispossessed in the middle of the field. Colm Spillane rounded off the scoring in the first half after the hard-working Leon Doocey made a great direct run through the Blarney middle third only to pop it to the supporting Spillane who made no mistake with his strike. The half-time score read 0-11 to 1-04 in our favour. Blarney started the 2nd half better.

They scored a nice point from 35 yards and when a long delivery landed in the Castlelyons square the ref blew his whistle for a penalty when he decided Rob Feeney had fouled his man before the ball arrived. The Blarney man hit a brilliant penalty to leave Jack Barry no chance in our goals. Keith O’Leary settled things down with a great point from the middle of the field to leave the score 2-05 to 0-12.

Leon Doocey continued to give the Blarney defence trouble with his direct running and he was fouled while through on goal on 38 minutes and the referee spread his arms and awarded us a penalty of our own. Alan Fenton’s shot was well saved by the Blarney keeper but credit to Alan he recovered and made no error with the resulting 65. We traded a couple of points each with the physicality of the game increasing markedly.

There was no inch given or taken. The score of the game came on the 49th minute when David Morrison won a low ball into him 30 yards from goal, rounded his man and headed directly for the Blarney goal and fired the ball into the corner of the net. This score pushed us 1-15 to 2-7 in front. We continued to outfight or opponents all over the pitch. The fullback line of Conor McCarthy, Colm Barry and Rob Feeney dominated the final minutes and restricted the Blarney team to only 1-04 from play through the whole game. Substitute Brian O’Donovan rounded off a good display with the final point to leave the score 1-18 to 2-08 at the long whistle.

Team: J Barry, C McCarthy, C Barry, R Feeney, S Moroney, L Sexton, D Spillane, K O’Leary (0-1), A Fenton (0-10,0-8f), P Roche, C Spillane (0-02), L Doocey (0-01), D Morrison (1-02), J Kearney (0-1), O Hallihan. Subs: B O’Donovan (0-1) for P Roche (45 mins), C O’Neill for S Moroney (50 mins).

FACILE VICTORY FOR JUNIORS

We travelled to Carrigtwohill last Monday to take on the home side in the junior hurling league. Castlelyons were too strong all over the field for Carrig’s 3rd string. Rob Feeney, Jack Waters and Brian O’Donovan all scored first half goals while Matthew Rosner, Colm O’Neill and Shane Cotter all stood out on the night. The first half score read 3-13 to 0-05.

Carrigtwohill fought back in the 2nd half. The scoreline was never in doubt and we continued to extend our lead Griffin O’Keeney, Alan O’Regan and Shane Flynn all getting on the scoresheet. Carrig did get a goal near the end, but Matthew Rosner responded with a goal of our own. The game ended 4-24 to 1-08.

Team: JP Murphy, E Barry, L Moroney, C McCarthy, J Healy, C O’Neill, S Cotter (0-3), R Feeney (1-0) B O’Donovan (1-05, 0-1f), G O’Keeney (0-02), S Flynn (0-02), A O’Regan (0-03), J Waters (1-2), D Spillane, M Rosner (2-2). Subs: O Hallihan (0-01) for R Feeney, I O’Sullivan for D Spillane, P Roche for C McCarthy.

U12

On Monday night Killeagh arrived in Castlelyons for an U12 League game. There were fine scores taken from both sides. But the result did not go our way on this occasion, with a much stronger Killeagh team pulling away in the second half to win well on the night.

Team: John Moloney, Alex O’Brien, Elliot Mc Loughlin, Ryan Wallace, Ewan McCarthy, Jimmy O’Riordan, Cionnath Cotter, Ned Condon, Carter Clegg, Dylan Barrett, Christopher O’Sullivan, Cathal Henley, Robbie Wallace.

REBELS BEAT THE DÉISE

Cork made a brilliant start to their Munster campaign last Sunday in Páirc Uí Chaoimh as they put a disappointing Waterford side to the sword. It was a proud day for Niall O’Leary as he captained his county for the first time in championship. This was a wonderful honour for Niall and we are very proud of him in our club as a wonderful ambassador and leader.

It was also a day that Brian Roche from Bride Rovers will also not forget quickly. He put in a fine performance to be awarded the Man of the Match award on his championship debut. Well done Niall and Brian. We wish you all the best of luck against Tipperary who are up next.
