One point loss in hurling league

-

Ballyhooly 0-19 Liscarroll/Churchtown 1-17

Our Saturday evening trip to Churchtown ended with our hosts Liscarroll/Churchtown taking the win by one point. There was a great battle between the sides as always and we were treated to an exciting game of hurling.

Ballyhooly played well in the first half and continued this trend into most of the second half, but in the last ten to fifteen minutes they seemed to loose their shape up front in particular and this proved costly.

Fionn Hess opened the Ballyhooly scoring and Barry Johnson added two points from frees and one from play to put us up 0-4 to no score after ten minutes.

Liscarroll/Churchtown levelled within three minutes, but we kept with them and points by Brian Lombard and Barry Johnson kept us a point ahead after the first quarter.

Ballyhooly continued to score regularly for the remainder of the half adding six more points, whereas Liscarroll/Churchtown only hit the target intermittently, scoring three points to leave the score Ballyhooly 0-12 Liscarroll/ Churchtown 0-9 at half-time.

Ballyhooly restarted well; Barry Johnson keeping the scoreboard ticking over with four points from frees and a 65, plus a point from play from Brian Lombard.

Liscarroll/Churchtown also added to their tally with points from play and frees and even though they lost their goalkeeper to a red card ten minutes into the half, a crucial goal in the 42nd minute brought them back to within a point of Ballyhooly with a quarter of an hour left.

For the next ten minutes scores were scarce, especially for Ballyhooly. Liscarroll/Churchtown had more chances but put four of their six opportunities wide. With five minutes left the scores stood at Ballyhooly 0-18 Liscarroll/Churchtown 1-16.

The wides continued, two each for Ballyhooly and Liscarroll/ Churchtown. Liscarroll/ Churchtown extended their lead to two points with a point from play in the 59th minute, but Barry Johnson pulled it back to one in extra time.

With time running out Seamus Roche’s shot to level went wide and victory went to Liscarroll/Churchtown.

Overall, this was a fine team performance with the defence impressing most, led by a fine half back line performance from John Roche, James Roche and Eoin Buckley.

Team: Tom Crowley, Colm Crowley, Jeff Gowen, Fintan Linehan, John Roche, James Roche, Eoin Buckley, Barry Johnson (0-12, 0-10f, 0-1 ‘65’), Seamus Roche, Gearoid Roche, Fionn Hess (0-1), Eoin Twomey, Dylan Collins (0-2), Denis Kiely, Brian Lombard (0-4).
