Brideview venued WW/EC Academy finals

-

Brideview was the venue for the WWEC Academy finals day last Saturday. Well done to Brideview for having everything in perfect condition for the U7, U8, U9, and U10 finals day. We saw plenty of exciting football and well done to all the players and mentors for a really good day.

All of the children went home happy with their medals and tired after a great days competition. Some clubs did however leave it late to withdraw so a few changes had to be made to the running order on the day, but overall it was a huge success. The Academy will now take a break for a while so all those children, making Holy communion and Confirmation over the next few weeks we hope you have a wonderful time.

U13 CUP FINAL

Bank Holiday Monday, May 1st at 1.30pm KO. Lismore v Cappoquin/Railway in Leonard Fraser Park

A cracking contest is in store in this one as Cappoquin Railway who finished runner-up to Brideview in the U13 A league will take on Lismore won the U13B league without losing a game. Both sides have impressed on the way to the decider so the best of luck to both sets of players and their mentors.

KENNEDY CUP PRACTICE GAMES

Best of luck also to the U14 League side that will journey to Roundwood in Wicklow for a Tournament hosted by our good friend Alan Kelly, who is now the Wicklow EMT manager. Hope they all enjoy the day where they will get three games.

NEW BLOOD NEEDED

The WW/EC Schoolboy League will be holding its AGM in the not too distant future and all clubs are asked to have at least one person come onto the committee. Just the dedicated are keeping the league going, so unless we get help from the clubs to fill the positions we will never grow stronger.

The boys and girls that play in the League get great enjoyment from taking part, but without a committee the league cannot function. Thee are plenty of jobs such as registrar, Children’s officer, EMT co-ordinator as well as the officer positions that need to be filled so clubs do give it some thought as without people at the top table, the League cannot survive.

ROUND TOWER HOTEL ARDMORE U14 PREMIER LEAGUE Clashmore Ramblers 1 Brideview United 4

Utd were crowned league champions on Thursday night last after winning their final league game at Pablo Park. Ramblers were first to attack when Peel shot wide after just four minutes. At the other end, Utd struck for their first goal in the 8th minute, Cotter struck a great ball beating Kelly, Ramblers’ keeper but the ball came back off the post but the inrushing Hegarty shot the ball to the net, putting the visitors 1-0 in front.

The sides were level four minutes later when Kenneally ran in behind Utd’s defence and chipped the advancing keeper King to put Ramblers back on level terms. Hegarty shot wide for Utd in the 19th minute before Kenneally was denied by a great save from King.

Whelan set up Cotter in the 25th minute, but Kelly brought off a fine save to keep the sides level. Cummins and Cotter both went close to putting the visitors back in front, but at the break the sides were level at 1-1.

The second half was only four minutes old when Cotter was brought down in the box and Whelan made no mistake from the penalty shot. Utd now got on top. A great move started by Cummins down the wing beat two defenders before crossing a great ball in to Cotter who struck home from close range.

It was now 3-1 to Utd. Kenneally had a great chance to reduce Utd’s lead but he shot wide from close range. Forbes and Cash both went close for Utd, before Kelleher saw King deny him with a terrific save after 55 minutes.

Utd were awarded a second penalty when again Cotter was brought down and once more Whelen shot home. Keogh went close for Ramblers in the 63rd minute, but again King saved well.

Time ran out for a victory and or just clinched a league title for them having been runners-up for the last two seasons.
