WORK UNDERWAY

-

In preparation for the 2023 SuperValu Tidy Towns completion a lot of work was carried out in the past week with the CE workers, the tidy towns work team and our new town residents contributing to the effort.

Footpaths on West Street, Main Street, East Main Street and all of the footpaths in the Millennium Park were swept. The long bed at the hotel was weeded as well as the planted space at the Monument and the top of the Intreo wall on West Street.

Thanks to the owners of business premises who have cleaned the front of their buildings and we ask that if you are a property owner in the West/Main Street area and are reading the notes to have a look at your property especially paintwork and base of walls. Please clean if necessary, in many cases all it takes is a bucket of water, a brush and a bit of time. Work needs to be completed by the 1st June as adjudication starts mid June onwards.

On Sunday morning, 30th April the sad news went around town that Susan Cronin

New Street had died. Susan was a past chairperson of Lismore Tidy Towns, a committed and hard worker who loved flowers and planting, great at reusing and a woman who took great pride in her native town. Sympathy is extended to her husband Pat, daughter Aine, son Padraigh, the Cronin and Tobin families. Rest in peace Susan.

ECO TIP OF THE WEEK HARDY ANNUALS?

As we start to think about summer bedding plants, try sowing your own plants from seed. For flowers without fuss go for old fashioned hardy annuals such as calendula marigolds, love in a mist, sunflowers and sweet peas. They are cheerful and great for attracting butterflies, bees and other beneficial insects.

The seeds of hardy annuals are cheap and don’t need heat to germinate. You can sow them in a cold greenhouse or in a conservatory. Fill a container with multipurpose compost, firm it down and sprinkle seeds over. Sieve compost over the top so the seeds are covered and water them in the surface. Plant them outside when the weather turns mild. They could also be planted directly outdoors by the creation of a small nursery bed in your garden.
