A tidy profit for town enhancement group

- JOHN AHERN

Members of Fermoy Tidy Towns aren't afraid to get their hands dirty. With the longer evenings and fine weather, they've once again sprung into action. Established volunteers, supported by some newcomers, are to be seen on a regular basis picking litter, removing weeds, watering plants, tending to hanging baskets and generally enhancing Fermoy town centre.

The group's leader is former publican and Cobh native, Cllr. Noel McCarthy. He and his colleagues were in The Wagon Tavern last Saturday to assist with a fundraising coffee morning - according to Noel, the occasion was a great success.

"Firstly, a massive word of thanks to Tom Aherne and his staff for hosting the event - they never let us down. Secondly, a big shout out to the public who turned out in large numbers to support this important fundraiser and thirdly, a sincere 'well done' to the Fermoy Tidy Towns committee, who are as active and enthusiastic as ever", Noel told The Avondhu. He went on to thank the many individuals and local businessess who provided prizes for what was a very successful raffle.

FEEL GOOD FACTOR

While Noel may be the 'captain of the team', the committee's success is down to the dedication of volunteers, who give up their time for the betterment of their town. While the work is sometimes hard, there's a great spirit within the group and this was very much in evidence last Saturday morning.

NEW HELPERS

The group are always on the lookout for additional helpers, so, when an invitation to residents of St. Joseph's Convent was extended - these newcomers to our shores were more than happy to get stuck in. They too were in attendance at the coffee morning and their input has been a major boost to the Tidy Towns group.

SUCCESSFUL FLAG DAY

The Tidy Towns coffers were added to recently thanks to a very well supported Flag Day. As they've done so many times in the past, townspeople dug deep to assist the hardworking volunteers.
