Lismore Tidy Towns at work

-

The application for the 2023 SuperValu competition was sent last week before the deadline date of 10th May so now a few weeks left before adjudication to get various tasks finished off.

Thanks to those property owners who have been asked to wash and paint premises and who have done the work or the work is in preparation. There are still some properties that could do with a wash and if you are a property owner on West/ Main/East Main Street please have a look at your property and help the tidy towns effort by doing the necessary bit of work.

A lot of work was carried out last week by the Lismore Tidy Towns work team- a big sweep up at the public car park and front of public toilets, sweeping footpaths around the town, relining of the seventeen wall baskets on the Millennium Park wall with a more sustainable eco friendly product - replacing the plastic lining- rearranging the planting at the Monument, weeding the three beds at the palm tree area, weeding the long bed at the hotel and the circular bed at the North Mall. Lots more work to be done!

Over the past two years Lismore

Tidy Towns has been involved in a procedure that had to be followed to develop a Community Biodiversity Action Plan for Lismore town and its environs. Funding for the carrying out of the plan has been successfully applied for and received from Waterford Leader Partnership and after a tender process Cork Nature Network were chosen to carry out the work required for the preparation of a plan. Local consultation re the plan was carried out at a meeting in the Red Hall East Main Street on Saturday, 18th February. At present research and surveys are being carried out by the Cork Nature Network.

There will be a public launch of the plan later in the summer.

Related to the Biodiversity work going on there are two events being held over the next two Saturdays open to everyone and free. On Saturday, 20th May there will be a Woodland Nature Work to explore the Biodiversity of the Owenashad River, meeting at the entrance to the Strand at 2pm. On Saturday, 27th May there will be a Bird Chorus Walk at 7.30am, location to be decided. Check community notice board outside the Vault Café West Street for further information.

ECO TIP OF THE WEEK

Prolong the life of your cut summer flowers. Top up water regularly. Do not cut flowers with buds too early-they may not open at the right time. Cut the stems at an angle to increase the surface area taking in water.

Condition the water with a homemade solution that you can use for many vases. Using one litre of water add a tablespoon of vinegar, a teaspoon of sugar and mix together.

Place flowers out of direct sunlight, away from heat sources. Replace the water every few days and pick off any dead blooms and foliage.
