Munster camogie blitz winners

-

Our 1st and 2nd year team showed the future of camogie at Coláiste Fionnchua is bright, as they added another trophy to their collection of silverware. Playing in Kilfinane, the girls won a Munster post-primary school camogie blitz.

In the early stages of the competition, Coláiste played teams from Clare, Cork and Waterford and had comprehensive victories in all of these. First up was Coláiste an Chraoibhín, Fermoy and this was a game where the girls had to battle the elements as well as the opposition. However, strong performances from Eimear Fouhy and Grace Roche gave Coláiste Fionnchua an early lead which they never lost.

Next up was Dungarvan College from Waterford and the scoreline did not reflect how physical a game this was. However, once again our girls were up to the challenge, and marshalled by captain and goalkeeper Shauna Hennessy, we were able to keep Dungarvan to the bare minimum of scores.

We then faced Ennistymon Vocational School in the semi-final. This was a very testing game, and we were lucky to be able to call in Grace Roche, who quickly landed a brace of goals. Along with scores from Chloe Dennehy and Eve Cleary, we made it to the final.

The final against Glanmire Community College was the tightest game of the competition. The teams were evenly matched throughout, and in a tough and competitive final, Coláiste Fionnchua ran out victorious on a scoreline of 5-08 to 4-05.

While the games were quite high scoring, it was the strength of our backline which buoyed our team to victory. Corner backs Eve Cleary and Ciara Walsh not only kept a tight rein on their players, their constant feeding of the ball into the forwards was vital. First year student Michelle Mullins was also on fire in the backline, and she showed real confidence by her constant forays to the forward line, one of which culminated in a crucial goal in the final. Well done to all players and their management team.

SENIOR LADIES FOOTBALLERS

Our senior ladies footballers’ journey came to an end last week as they lost the Cork Post-Primary Schools semi-final to a very strong Coláiste Mhuire side in Buttevant. This was a game our girls struggled to get to grips with, as a physically dominant Coláiste Mhuire took an early lead and kept it the whole way through.

This game also marked the last game for three stalwarts of the ladies football in Coláiste Fionnchua. Mischa Spillane, Maeve Heenan and Leah Geary represented our school with pride and passion over the last five years. They were the cornerstone of two Munster final wins, as well as numerous county finals in football and camogie. The girls have been excellent ambassadors both on and off the pitch, and fantastic mentors to their younger teammates. We thank them for their dedication over the last five years and wish them the very best of luck in their future sporting endeavours, at club, college, and county level.
