RED FM CORK COUNTY SENIOR HURLING LEAGUE DIV 2 Fermoy 1-20 St Finbarrs 1-18

On Sunday, 14th May Fermoy welcomed St Finbarrs to Páirc McGearailt for the Red FM Cork County Senior Hurling League Div 2 fixture, weather conditions were windy and cloudy, ground conditions were good. Fermoy from the throw-in battled hard under the conditions and were playing against a very strong wind.

Fermoy were off the mark within a minute scoring the first point and by the seventh minute Fermoy and Finbarrs were on level terms on 2 points; we added another 2 points to extend the lead before Finbarrs scored a goal to go a point ahead. Both teams added points and by the 25th minute Finbarrs were ahead 1-06 to 0-08. Before the half time whistle Finbarrs outscored Fermoy by 3 points to 1 leaving the score at half-time Fermoy 0-09 and St Finbarrs 1-09. A 3 point lead for the Barr’s going into the second half.

Fermoy played with a strong wind in the second half, scoring 2 points within the first four minutes and on the eight minute a great goal was scored by Shane Aherne, who also contribute­d 3 points during the game. Jake Carr contribute­d 10 points (07 from frees). The score with fifteen minutes to go was Fermoy 0-15 Finbarrs 1-12, a 3 point lead.

From there to the final whistle, both teams added 5 points each, bringing the score at full time to Fermoy 1-20 St Finbarrs 1-18 ; a two point victory over the Barrs any day is a fantastic result. Well done to all involved on a job well done, keep up the good work lads.

FÉ 18 PREMIER 2 MINOR HURLING LEAGUE FINAL Fermoy 2-12 Carrigtwoh­ill 1-17

Fermoy v Carrigtwoh­ill lined up to contest the Fé 18 Premier 2 Minor Hurling League final and after two minutes the sides were on level terms, a point each.

After eight minutes we were level on 0-2 each; on fourteen minutes Fermoy were trailing by two points. Between the 14th minute and the 24th minute Carrigtwoh­ill scored 0-08 unanswered points to leave the scores 0-2 to 0-10 in favour of Carrig. At this stage Fermoy were finding it hard to get scores, between the 24th and 28th minute they got the rub of the green to score a goal and two points to leave the score at half time Fermoy 1-04 Carrigtwoh­ill 0-10.

In the second half both sides were battling hard, the first score of the half went to Carrig after six minutes and again in the eight minute, leaving Carrig ahead by 0-12 to 1-04, a five point lead. The sides exchanged points between the 8th and 16th minute leaving the scores Fermoy 1-07 Carrig 0-14. Fermoy cut the deficit to a point after scoring a goal and adding a point to leave the sides level with it all to play for now.

Between the 21st and 24th minutes both exchanged points, but on the 25th minute Carrig sent the ball to the net to edge ahead, this was followed by a point for Fermoy. Now with the clock ticking and on the 27th minute, Carrig put over another point, putting them two points ahead.

Both sides exchanged points to the final whistle to leave the full time score Fermoy 2-12 Carrigtwoh­ill 1-17, a two point defeat for Fermoy which is hard to take after the lads put everything into the game, but unfortunat­ely we came up short on the day. To all involved - you gave it your all and you can be proud of it.

FERMOY GAA CLUB GOLF CLASSIC

The 2023 Fermoy GAA Club Golf Classic held on Thursday and Friday last at Fermoy Golf Club, and again was a fantastic success for the club. The would like to take this opportunit­y to thank those who organised the event, Brian Shinnick, Alan O’Connor, Brian O’Sullivan, Rory Morrison and Martin Brennan, for their Trojan work again this year and making the event a very worthwhile event and fundraiser.

Thanks also to the sponsors of the event; Hanna’s as main sponsor and David Ryan, thanks also to each team sponsor, tee box sponsors, to all who very generously sponsored prizes for the competitio­n and raffle, these were much appreciate­d. A thank you to Marie Byrne and Brendan Buckley for their official work on site over the 2 days as they set the players on their way.

Fermoy GAA Club would like to thank our own Denis Twomey and Fermoy Golf Club staff, it’s a fantastic venue for the event and as ever the course was in immaculate condition despite previous weeks of heavy rain, also the hospitalit­y provided by Monica and Pawel and their staff, on a long day, was second to none.

And finally, Mary Moloney, family and friends were in attendance to present the prizes in memory of her late husband Dano Moloney, the club is sincerely obliged for this continued support from Mary and in Dano’s memory.

The club extends its sympathy to the families and extended families of Eileen O’Brien (nee Barry), Captain Keane’s Grove, Mitchelsto­wn and formerly St Mary’s Terrace, Fermoy. Eileen passed away unexpected­ly. Beloved wife of Tom and mother to her daughters Martina, Ann Marie, Elaine; Deborah, Deidre, Maeve and Amelia. Loving Nannie and sister; sadly missed and remembered by her husband, family and extended family, neighbours and friends. May she rest in peace.
