BUSY WEEKEND FOR SOME
Some of our juvenile athletes were very busy on the last weekend in April. Cody Scanlan and Lucy Dennehy took part in the Templemore Throws weekend on Sunday
and Matthew Long took part in the Spike Island 5k race.
Lucy won the U15 javelin event with a noteworthy throw of 27.94 metres. Cody Scanlan also won the U14 javelin with a throw of 36.73 metres. Cody also took home bronze in the discus with 17.78m and silver in the shot with 7.74m. Congratulations to both of them! All of this is excellent practice for the upcoming championships.
Matthew Long took part in a unique event on Spike Island to do his first 5k. On arrival at the island by ferry, competitors were escorted to the fort for a brief history of the island from one of the tour guides. Matthew completed the race in 26.02 and his dad Joe trailed behind him at 26.19. According to both it was a lovely run with plenty of scenery even if it was raining and the fog covered most of Cobh. Well done Matthew and Joe.
It was off to the Mardyke in Cork city on Saturday, 6th May for the Cork County Schools Athletics championships. Six of our juvenile members competed for their respective schools on the day.
We had a number of girls togging out in the red of Loreto Fermoy and in the minor girls Emilie McElvaney toed the line in the 800m and had a strong run finishing in 4th position.
The junior girls saw Rachel O’Flynn running in first place and dominating the 1,500m, Maebh O’Connor ran excellently in the 800m and 100m and Chloe O’Flynn had a great outing to finish strongly in the 100m race and a great 2nd in the 80m hurdles. The minor 4x100m relay team, which included all four girls, finished in a fantastic third place.
Two members togged out in the blue of Coláiste an Chraoibhín. In the senior girls Rachel Walsh had a solid run in the 3000m and Fionn Hayes had a great run in the minor boys 1,500m. A huge congratulations to all our athletes who represented their schools and clubs so well.
