21 is the magic number

Last weekend the IJKA Ireland Open Karate Championships took place in Fermoy, and we are delighted to report that it was a tremendous success. It was a pleasure to welcome so many clubs and associations from all over Ireland to the event.

The championships attracted a record number of entries and the standard among all the contestants was very high. This is a testimony to the dedication shown by all the students and their instructors.

Fermoy Karate Club once again fared well among the medal winners, bagging a total of 21 medals, 6 gold, 6 silver and 9 bronze.

The best club of the tournament went to Kaizen Karate Club from Dublin, followed in a close second by Kerry Shotokan.

A big thank you to all the clubs and associations who participated in the championships and to the large crowd of supporters who filled the hall. To Loreto Secondary School we extend our gratitude for allowing us to use your magnificent sports complex, and not forgetting all our club members, parents, and friends who helped out on the day, and The Avondhu newspaper for your continued support.

The club would like to congratulate Sensei Martin Sheehan from Kildorrery Karate Club on being appointed as IJKA Ireland kumite coach. Martin is an outstanding tactician and will be a great asset to the association.

Training continues at the usual times every Tuesday and Thursday evening all year round. Class times are as follows junior beginners 7pm to 8pm, advanced juniors and teenagers 8pm to 9pm, and adults all grades 8pm to 9.30pm. We have beginners’ lessons ongoing every week at all our sessions.
