Strong finish in adult league ends in defeat

-

Dungarvan 1-08 Shamrocks 0-05

Our juniors bowed out of the adult league following a semi-final defeat to Dungarvan last Sunday morning in Dungarvan GAA Grounds. This was a tight affair between two well matched teams with a third quarter goal from the hosts decisive in deciding the final outcome.

Having got the better of the early exchanges we opened the scoring after five minutes with an Amelie Quann pointed free. The advantage was doubled soon after when Jessica McSweeney was fouled and the free was slotted over the bar. Dungarvan settled into the game and replied with two points in quick succession before they took the lead for the first time with their third point just before half-time. Another Amelie Quann pointed free kicked from the ground saw both teams go in at the break with the score 0-03 each. The defences for both sides were getting the better of the exchanges in the opening half and scores were hard won, a trend which would continue into the second half.

Despite the excellence of the Shamrocks’ defence Dungarvan added two further points to their tally in the opening minutes of the second half before a Shamrocks goal chance kicked by Kate Sheehan was superbly saved by the Dungarvan goalkeeper and from the break the ball was moved up the pitch and slotted home by the Dungarvan full forward. Shamrocks response saw the deficit reduced to a goal, with points from Amelie Quann and Caoimhe Whelan. However, it was Dungarvan who finished stronger and added on three unanswered points in the final quarter to run out deserving winners.

Attention for us now turns to the Junior A Championship which begins in July.

U16 COUNTY FINAL

Next Saturday, May 20th our U16s will take on Gaultier in the U16B County final in Ardmore, with a 2.30pm throw in. Both teams have reached the County final stage unbeaten so this should be a close encounter. It was four years ago when the teams last met in the 2019 U12 County final with a late Amber Neville goal seeing us edge out a thrilling game by a single point. As always, all support for the girls next Saturday would be really appreciated!

PRIMARY SCHOOL SKILLS COMPETITION

Well done to Aifric Sheridan, Leah O’Donovan and Caoimhe Sheridan who represented Knockanore NS in the Primary Schools Football Skills Competition recently in Dungarvan GAA Grounds. All three girls acquitted themselves very well as they completed the different skills against teams from other schools throughout the county.

U14 CHAMPIONSHIP

Following our opening round win against Comeragh Rangers our U14s came up against a strong Ballysaggart team last week and despite goals from Alyson Murphy, Caoimhe Sheridan and Robyn McLaughlin, Ballysaggart ran out winners. In round 3 we host Ballyduff Upper in Knockanore this Monday evening.

U12 LEAGUE

The WLGFA U12 League is due to start on Wednesday, May 24th with Shamrocks included in a group with Old Parish, Stradbally, Clashmore/Kinsalebeg, Ballyduff Upper, Ardmore/Grange and Ballysaggart.

U8S/U10S

Both our U8s and U10s hosted Ballyduff Upper on Monday, May 8th in Knockanore. Both teams played some fantastic football and it’s great to see the progress being made by the girls so early into the season. Both the U8s and U10s will play in the WLGFA U8/U10 blitzes throughout the summer with the next blitz due to be hosted by Dungarvan on June 4th.
