Castlelyons NS awarded 7th Green Flag

- KATIE GLAVIN

Castlelyons National School was recently awarded its 7th Green Flag for ‘Global Citizenship – Energy’.

The Radisson Blu Hotel at Little Island was the venue where the ceremony took place, with the local school and its students being awarded the coveted flag for all the work it has carried out.

Green Schools coordinating teacher at Castlelyons NS, Aisling Ó Tuama, explained that as part of their work towards achieving their seventh Green Flag, students revised all the previous flags such as litter and waste, transport, biodiversity and more.

“We focused on energy on a global scale like looking at energy use all over the world, how we can help poorer countries, what we can do or they can do, and looking at energy use in other countries. We looked an awful lot at renewable energy such as wind farms, solar, so the school have been studying that for the past two years,” she said.

While the entire school is involved in learning about each of the topics, driving the work forward is a Green Schools committee, comprising of several pupils.

Among the activities carried out was nominating ‘energy monitors’ for the school, which involved pupils visiting each class and monitoring the school’s energy usage. Competitions were also held and a ‘Green Schools action day’ was hosted at the school and projects on energy were carried out.

“The children are all very enthusiastic about it. It’s really created an awareness within the school. The whole idea of the initiative is that you teach it within the school and when they go home, they implement it at home as well,” Ms Ó

Tuama added.

Principal Nelius de Róiste congratulated all involved: “Well done to all involved in this fantastic achievement. Maith sibh.”

On Friday, June 23, Castlelyons NS will be hosting a Green Schools launch day, in which the new Green Flag will be flown at the school. Congratulations Castlelyons NS!
