'Enjoy water safely' this summer - CCC Water Safety Officer appeal

- KATIE GLAVIN

An appeal is being made to the public to stay informed and to enjoy the water safely this summer season.

Cork County Council Road and Water Safety Officer, Caroline Casey, is appealing to the public to take all precautions for those planning a swim this summer.

“Make sure all children are supervised around water at all times. That means, holding hands with small children when near or in water because holding hands saves lives. Always use a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags, close and parallel to the shore,” Ms Casey advised.

KNOW YOUR ABILITY

In Fermoy, Mitchelstown and surrounds, river swimming is a popular summer pastime, particularly amongst young people. According to Ms Casey, 62% of all drownings happen inland in rivers, lakes, reservoirs and quarries.

“Cork County Council services appeal to people not to swim in rivers, lakes, reservoirs and quarries. If you do, make sure there is adult supervision and have a form of communication with you in case you need help. Know your ability and know your surroundings,” she said.

For those travelling to the beaches this summer, Ms Casey advised to always use a lifeguarded beach.

Speaking on inflatables, she went on to highlight the danger of using such items, stating that they are ‘ unsafe’ on open water.

“Rip currents are also a hazard at the beach, so inform yourself before you go and keep on eye on the Cork Beach Lifeguards' Facebook page during the summer. All the relevant safety information is posted there and what flags are at each beach. Enjoy the water safetly,” Ms Casey concluded.
