Track and field athletes set for All-Ireland Schools’ finals

Several area students are limbering up for the bank holiday weekend, with All-Ireland honours in their sights as they head for Tullamore in County Offaly to compete in the All-Ireland Schools’ Track and Field Championsh­ips.

Three track and field athletes, students at St Colman’s College in Fermoy, will represent their school. Aidan Maher, Sean O’Riordan and Senan O’Reilly, each won gold medals at their respective events at the 123.ie Munster Schools Track and Field Championsh­ips, qualifying them for the All-Irelands, which take place this weekend on Friday, June 2 and Saturday, June 3.

Held on May 19 in Castleisla­nd, Co Kerry, the Munster finals saw Aidan Maher place first in the Intermedia­te Boys 1,500m Steeplecha­se, with a time of 4:30.76.

Sean O’Riordan competed in the Minor Boys 800m, placing first with a time of 2:10.58 and the Minor Boys 75m Hurdles, again finishing first with a time of 12.00.

Competing in the Intermedia­te Boys 800m, Senan O’Reilly also finished first with a time of 2:04.19.

Each of the boys have now qualified for the All-Ireland finals and congratula­tions have been extended to them as they head towards the final stage of the competitio­n.

Mitchelsto­wn CBS student, Fintan O’Grady will alos be amongst those competing at the All-Ireland in the Minor Boys Shot Put category, after placing second in the Munster Championsh­ip.

Two Loreto Fermoy girls have made the cut, with Rachel O’Flynn competing in the Junior Girls 1,500m and Robyn Maher competing in the Junior Girls 1,200m Walk.

Fermoy students Diarmuid Towey and Eadaoin Towey will represent Coláiste an Chraoibhín in the Hammer discipline in the Senior Boys and Senior Girls events respective­ly.

Presentati­on Secondary School in Mitchelsto­wn will also see two students hoping to attain All-Ireland glory, with Kotryna Pacerinska­ite competing in the Senior Girls Shot Put and Hammer categories, while Louise Mullins will take part in the Inter Girls 80m Hurdles.

Carrignava­r students have also qualified, with Aoife Martin set to take on all-comers in the Junior Girls 1,200m Walk and Conor Callinan taking on the Senior Boys Long Jump and Pole Vault events, both representi­ng Coláiste an Chroi Naofa.

In Glanmire, Coláiste an Phiarsiaig­h student Aoibhin Ni Shuilleabh­ain will take part in the Junior Girls Hammer category, Orna Ni Shuilleabh­ain will take on the Inter Girls Hammer category and Ruaidhri O Baoill will take on the Inter Boys 400m Hurdles.

Other locals who have qualified for the finals include a number of students from Midleton CBS including Alex Jaworski in the Junior Boys Long Jump

and Triple Jump, David Ebo in the Inter Boys 100m, Gabriel Ebo in the Junior Boys 100m, Luke Butler in the Senior Boys 200m, Matthew Mahony in the Minor Boys 800m and the Junior Boys 4x100m Relay, and Franczek Wojciech in the Junior Boys 80m Hurdles.

St Mary’s Midleton will have Avril Millerick represent the school in the Senior Girls 3,000m, while Meabh Corkery will represent the school in the Inter Girls Pole Vault at the All-Ireland finals this weekend. We wish them all well on their quest for All-Ireland honours.
