Thumbs up for Midleton Show
Our 'early summer' weather was a massive boost for the organisers of last Sunday's Midleton Show. Hosted by the Fell family who reside in the townland of Ballindenisk near Watergrasshill, their extensive holding proved to be an ideal venue.
Facilities were excellent for participants and attendees and according to informed sources, the calibre of animal on show was 'exceptional'. There were large entries in the livestock and bloodstock classes, the arts and crafts section was very popular, catering options were varied and there was plenty to entertain the youngsters (children were admitted free of charge).
PRIDE IN THEIR ANIMALS
Given the high standards, it was difficult to come away from Midleton Show with a rosette - those that picked up a prize, were, needless to say, chuffed. It was obvious that owners took exceptional pride in their animals
and the judges' job was certainly not an easy one.
There are several lobby groups that get a lot of mileage from 'animal welfare' issues. From what we saw last weekend, the animals on show are better fed and groomed than ourselves! Great credit is due to owners/handlers for the time and effort they put in preparing their animals.
It's also a great sign for the industry to see so many young people on showing duty.
HORSES APLENTY
Horses from all over Ireland were in Ballindenisk, with a record entry reported for the gymkhana competitions - the event ran for almost 8 hours. Once again, the spacious sand arena was in splendid condition - a team of volunteers ensured it was perfect for competitors.
DON'T FORGET THE DOGS
Dog owners were out in force on the day. From miniature breeds to Great Danes, they all got a chance to shine. The show was also an opportunity for breeders and owners to meet, mingle and compare notes. The atmosphere was relaxed, the weather sensational and no one was in any hurry home.
GREAT TO BE BACK
Traditional events such as Midleton Show are back with a bang and the public have responded by turning out in very significant numbers. Organisers of last Sunday's event were lucky with the weather, however, the all important planning and preparing had nothing to do with luck and countless hours were put in preparing the venue, registering entries and overseeing what was a first class event in every respect.
