Obituary - Peg (Margaret – Peggy) Murray (nee McCarthy), Cappoquin

-

The entire community was shocked to learn of the sudden passing of Peg (Margaret - Peggy) Murray (nee McCarthy), Main Street, Cappoquin, Co. Waterford and formerly of Leitrim, Kilworth, Co. Cork, which occurred unexpectedly on 2nd May.

Peg was born in Kilworth on 15th November, 1949, the youngest sister of Jerry, Tom and May. She went to primary school in Kilmurry and attended 'the Tech' in Fermoy for secondary school. She went to work in Moorepark where her brother Jerry worked and where some of her nephews work to this day.

Peg was a proud Cork woman, but Waterford is where she would eventually settle. She met her beloved late husband Jim Murray in the Top Hat in Fermoy in 1974 and got married in 1979. Together they had 2 children, Bridget and James, both of whom Peg was immensely proud of.

Peg was extremely outgoing and sociable and a real community person, from her time taking control of the stalls at the school Sales of Work, to the regular visits to the cards and bingo. She was a great neighbour and friend – the door to her house was never closed to anyone. She always had time for a chat and had great wit. Her presence in the square will be truly missed, where she spent many a happy days sitting and chatting with her neighbours and friends. Her caring nature was evident when she worked as a home help and continued in her time helping in the Cappoquin Day Care Centre.

Family was especially important to Peg. Even after the deaths of her brothers and sister, she always stayed in contact with her cousins, nephews and nieces and was a great woman to attend family occasions. Jim’s sudden death in 2019 was a big shock to Peg and everyone who knew him.

Peg was always close with her own family - Bridget, James, his wife Maria and her granddaughter Rachel, the apple of Peg’s eye. Her death leaves a void that nobody can heal, but love leaves a memory no one can steal.

She will be sadly missed by all family, friends and all who knew her - may she rest in peace.

On Friday evening, May 5th Peg lay in repose at her son James' house, Bawnahila, Kilrush, Dungarvan, where Rosary was led by Fr. Donal McCarthy in the presence of her loving family, relatives and friends.

Lying in repose at Aidan Walsh and Sons Funeral Home, Cappoquin on Saturday evening, funeral prayers were recited by Rev. Fr. Donal McCarthy in the presence of her loving family, relatives, neighbours and friends, followed by removal to St. Mary’s Church, Cappoquin. On arrival, her remains were received and blessed by Rev. Fr. Martin Keogh P.P. and Fr McCarthy.

On Sunday morning, funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr Keogh P.P. assisted by Fr McCarthy and Fr Eamon Barry. Readings during the Mass were recited by her nieces, Mary Bridget Keavney and Diane Byrne. Prayers of the faithful were read by her godson and nephew Billy McCarthy, niece and Goddaughter Catherine Mannix, nephews John Paul McCarthy and Finbarr McCormack. The offertory gifts were presented to the altar by her daughter Bridget and son James.

A lovely selection of music and hymns was provided by soloist Sarah Barry and organist Marjorie Moran throughout the Mass. Following Communion, her grand-niece Caroline Murray delivered a fitting eulogy, giving an insight into Peg’s life, interests, hobbies and recalling fond memories of times shared together, and acknowledging the help and support the family have received during this difficult time.

Then, following funeral Mass, burial took place in St. Declan’s Cemetery, Cappoquin. Fr McCarthy assisted by Fr Barry officiated the graveside prayers where Peg was laid to rest in the presence of her loving family, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Following the graveside prayers 'Hills around Fermoy' was played, which was a song by Peg’s first cousin, Tom Healy (RIP).

"Just a prayer for the family, who loved,

Just a memory fond and true,

In our hearts, you will live forever,

Because we thought the world of you"
