SVP Fermoy benefit from Bridge Club fundraiser

- KATIE GLAVIN

Fermoy Bridge Club recently donated funding of €1,578 to St Vincent de Paul, following their annual fundraiser.

Fermoy Bridge Club President, Joe Moran, told TheAvondhu that the club has a tradition every year in which they hold a Bridge night with an entry charge and all the funds raised are then donated to a charity of the club president's choice.

“I decided to choose St Vincent de Paul who are a very active charity in the locality. I felt Covid had a very negative effect on their fundraising and they do really need funds, especially with the additional needs since the cost of living has gone up,” Mr Moran said.

An entry fee is charged on the fundraising night and a draw is also held and all monies collected are then donated.

Miriam Adair, president of the Fermoy St Vincent de Paul conference, thanked the club for their donation and said that the funds will go back into the local community in various ways.

“It’s a sizeable donation. It’s huge. It will all be going back into the community and will be used for educational purposes, for the food band, for energy and fuel allowance, support for children in need and more,” she said.

According to Ms Adair and fellow St Vincent de Paul members, Jerry O’Sullivan and Maureen Condon, as the population in Fermoy and surrounds increases, so too does the demand on the service and the needs that have to be met locally.

Fermoy Bridge Club meet each Monday and Thursday night and on Tuesday mornings.

During the autumn, the club hosts lessons for beginners and anyone new to the game, which are expected to commence once again this autumn, with details to follow. For anyone interested in getting involved, contact Maggie at (086) 8068226.
