Single point defeat in the 2023 Division 2 Football League final

-

Last Tuesday we headed for Churchtown to play Deel Rovers in the Division 2 Football League Final.

The ball was thrown in at 7.30pm sharp. First minute scores were denied at both goals until Eoin O’Regan was successful in getting the opening point on the board. Darragh quickly followed suit with another score. A kick out that found Billy on the wing, where there was serious skill demonstrated, flicking the ball over his opponents head and into Cory who added our 3rd point.

Our opponents were kept scoreless until the 8th minute when they found the back of the net. Deel Rovers dominated the play midway in the opening half but thankfully, didn’t take their chances. We also lost possession with the ball being turned over by our opponents.

A 20 minute lull in scoring was broken, a free won by Billy landed to the hands of Darragh who found Cory who converted. Noah added our fifth coming into half time when he was fouled and a ball perfectly positioned for his left boot was converted. Half time scoreline stood at 0-5 to our opponents 1-3.

Scoring in the second half was poor on both sides with only 3 points added from each team. Cory got us on board with a converted free but that 2 point gap haunted us until almost the final whistle. We introduced a number of subs who lifted our spirits but we still could not find the posts. A late free taken by Cory reduced the deficit to a single point but despite a number of opportunities we could not redeem it back to a drawn game. The final scoreline was 0-8 to 1-6, a disappointing single point loss. Well done to Deel Rovers on the win.

ANOTHER WIN IN THE DIVISION 1 HURLING LEAGUE

Last Friday night we welcome Ballyhooly for a home game on an idyllic summer’s evening. We had a super win in this game which started slowly but we found our rhythm. Defence was outstanding with notable performances from Eoin McHugh at fullback and Barry Sheedy at centre back. Stalwart Paul Burke was corner forward and kicked in a nice goal. A great second half was played, where we kept our opponents to 3 points. We finished the game out very strongly on a scoreline of 2-14 to 0-10.
