Long trip to Enniskeane

-

Our Junior B footballers will be hoping to build on their encouraging opening round draw with Clann na nGael, when they make the long trip to Enniskeane on Friday evening to take on Garnish.

No major changes in personnel are predicted with the selectors expected to give a vote of confidence to those who started in Ballyanley (Inniscarra). The boys have been ticking over nicely since that tough test and if a few kinks can be ironed out, we should go close.

As we enter June, things are starting to get serious on the championship front and the next few weeks will tell a lot. Those who intend travelling to Enniskeane are reminded to purchase match tickets online. This can be done by logging on to the Cork GAA website.

LOTTO RESULTS

Results from Thursday, May 25 - numbers drawn: 08, 13, 24 and 31 (no winner). Lucky dips to: €50 Mary Browne, Ballyduff Upper (online entry); €50 John O'Keeffe, Lyrebarry, Araglin; €25 Frank Kiernan, Propogue (online entry) and €25 Kieran McGann, Castlelyons, c/o Fitzgerald Hurleys, Araglin.

Next lotto draw is tonight, 1st June in Christy's at 9.30pm for a jackpot of €12,200. All welcome.

STAYING POSITIVE

The next Rebels' Bounty draw is on Thursday, 1st June; since it changed from the 'county board' draw to the Rebels' Bounty, Araglin GAA have yet to record a winner - so we're due a bit of luck. Think positive!

PLAYERS' INJURY SCHEME

We've most players signed up online at this stage, those small few who 'haven't got round to it', are encouraged to do the necessary ASAP. Thanks.

REBELS, DOWN BUT NOT OUT

The Cork senior hurlers ended their 2023 championship campaign last weekend, following defeat to reigning All-Ireland champions, Limerick. Given the way this competition was set up, there was always going to be 2 'high profile' casualties - those to lose out were Cork and Waterford. Interestingly, Cork, Waterford and Tipperary are all in senior football action this weekend. Cork hurling supporters who want to get a few more wears out of their new 'Sports Direct' jerseys have the option of travelling to Semple Stadium on Sunday to see the Cork U20 hurlers take on Offaly in an All-Ireland final.

WORK IN THE FIELD

It's good to see representatives from the various clubs maintaining the community field to a high standard. Pony club and hunt club members were busy during the week preparing for next Sunday's dog show. From a GAA perspective, Tom Kenneally Sr. is back on grass cutting duty. Also, thanks to Alan Hegarty and John Browne for helping to transport material from the old dressing rooms to the new container during the week. A word of thanks as well to Willie Rice for the use of his tractor and grab.

FIXTURE

Friday, 2nd June in Enniskeane at 7.30pm, Bon Secours sponsored Cork County Junior B (1) Football Championship (round 2), Araglin v Garnish. Support appreciated.

MORE STRIMMING TO BE DONE

There was supposed to be a 'major strimming operation' in the community field last Monday evening, however, due to a number of factors - 'prior commitments', 'mechanical failure, 'strimmers being out on loan', 'shortage of petrol', 'no chord' and 'bad backs' - only one strimming volunteer made it to the venue with his strimmer intact. This man was Pa O'Donovan. Pa is one of the few men in Araglin to have a poem composed about him - the 14 verse poem is entitled 'That Most Wanted Man' and was written by Mitchelstown based actor, Thomas O'Donoghue.

SYMPATHY TO THOSE RECENTLY BEREAVED

Recent bereavements include Catherine 'Kitty' Keohane from Marian Square, Fermoy and formerly of Kilally, Kilworth. Kitty came from a family of 14 and was the eldest of the Twomey siblings. She passed away in Marymount Hospice on Friday, 19th May. She is survived by her husband, John, daughter Annette and son, Sean, sisters: Eileen (Carey), Mary (Barrett), Margaret (Hennessy), Ann (Walsh), Carmel (Fitzgibbon), Ger (Baragry) and Ber (O'Keeffe); brothers: Pat, John, Michael, Tom, Denis and Dave. May she rest in peace.

Mary O'Mahony, formerly of Old Post Office in Araglin, passed away on 18th May, RIP. Araglin GAA also notes the passing of Tadgh Donovan from Rathcormac, a brother of Liam Flynn's wife, Catherine (Liam and Catherine are volunteer stewards in Páirc Uí Chaoimh). The club also extends sympathy to the Nugent family (Ballyduff Upper) on the death of Michael Nugent, along with the Reidy and Farrell families on the loss of Sheila Farrell (Macroney, Kilworth and Ballyduff Upper). We were also saddened to hear that the mother of former Garda Superintendent, Kieran McGann, Nellie, has passed away. May they all rest in peace.
