CARRIGALINE PROVE TOO STRONG Kilworth 2-15 Carrigaline 3-23

Carrigaline ran our comfortable winners in the Red FM Division 3 hurling tie played in Kilworth last Saturday evening.

The opening exchanges were tight with Carrigaline leading 0-2 to 0-3 after 10 minutes, our scores coming from Pearse Riordan and a Mike Sheehan free. Carrigaline got the next 5 points to open up a 0-2 to 0-8 lead by the 20th minutes. We seemed to stem the tide with a Mike Sheehan pointed free following a foul on Liam Whelan. However, from the resulting puckout the ball was moved quickly up field with Carrigaline finding the net for their first green flag and extend their lead.

0-3 to 1-8 after 22 first half minutes. Points from Jeromy Saich and Cormac Donnellan were cancelled out by 2 Carrigaline points in a minute. Will Condon on his return finished the first half scoring to leave it 0-6 to 1-10 at the short whistle.

Within two minutes of the restart Carrigaline added 3 points on the bounce to increase their lead 0-6 to 1-13. Kilworth replied with two Liam Whelan while flags (1 free) and the score read 0-8 to 1-13 in the 35th minute. The Carrigdhoun men went on to dominate the next 5 minutes adding 4 points (1 free) to extend their advantage 0-8 to 1-17 with a third of the game to go. Jamie Sheehan goaled in the 41st minute following a great move. A cross-field ball from Jeromy Saich was caught by Will Condon who calmly handpassed to Jamie who made no mistake finding the net for a superb goal.

Carrigaline’s response was immediate pointing at the other end and their advantage was 10 points, 1-8 to 1-18. Eoin Carey with a long range free, and a pointed free from Noel McNamara either side of two Carrigaline scores was followed by Carrigaline’s second green flag, and their lead was out to 13 points, 1-10 to 2-20 by the 50th minute.

Kilworth rallied with 4 points in succession from Noel McNamara (free), Jeromy Saich, Eoin Carey from distance and Will Condon and a strong finish looked on the cards, the score now reading 1-14 to 2-20. Carrigaline halted our momentum with 2 points in the 55th and 56th minute and their 3rd goal followed soon after, the score now standing at 1-14 to 3-22, heading for added time.

Kilworth battled on with Noel McNamara adding 1-1 from placed balls before the finish. Firstly, from a pointed free after Noel himself was fouled and then with a goal from a well low struck strike from a 21-yard free, Brian Sheehan upended in the build-up. Carrigaline completed the scoring deep into injury time to leave it 2-15 to 3-23 at the final whistle.
